horizontal or vertical?
Jul 12th, 2010, 1:54pm

Do we have any stats on verticle versus horizontal card format sales? ie: which sells better, maybe even broken down by catagories and dates? I guess we can't duplicate a card design and just change the format though I'm curious to see if there's a preference among the consumers to aid me in making informed design decisions.

Hello Rod,
Personally it all depends on the picture and what you are trying to create.  Landscape, which is a horizontal view and portrait which is a vertical view.  At gift shops and card retailers the greater percentage of cards I find are of the portrait view.  Hoewver, many of the holiday issued cards such as for Christmas are landscape based on the premise that a large percentage of these cards are scenics and were painted or photographed in a landscape format.
As to which is more popular among consumers, I don't think you'll ever get an accurate response for that since either is preferable depending on the subject.  And since the larger portion are subject related and usually a portrait view, numbers would reflect in that regard.
JMHO!
I'd just stick to what works best for your subject.

Rod,
Vertical/portrait wins for us so far this year at 62%.  Horizontal/landscape is at 38%. We recently had an order of 40 for the same vertical design, so that is one reason for the larger percentage.  Interesting question! Roll Eyes

Out of our 4 best selling cards 3 are horizontal and 1 is vertical ( the vertical card is our 2 best seller). Smiley

Interesting question Rod and one I had wondered about myself but never bothered to take the time to see what my own stats showed...so thanks for that!

Since I joined my stats indicate 53% of my sales are Vertical/Portrait and 47% of my sales were Horizontal/Landscape cards so my stats suggest at least for me, it's nearly an equal wash for what customers will buy Grin  This includes large orders for the same card in both orientations.  For me it all depends on the category and type of card apparently.

Nice to know.

I doubt if it makes a diffference w/ online sales. I design according to subject -just happen to have mainly vert designs so that's what's selling in my GCU store.

In real stores it's different as vertical are prefered because the racks are designed to hold vertical cards. Boxed cards are displayed differently -hence why you can have Christmas cards that are horizontal. None of this is a factor w/online card displays.

This is something that we do not track.  We try to be conscious when choosing cards for promotions, etc. to use both orientations, not necessarily at the same time (one month portrait, one month vertical for example).  Our email reminders accommodate both orientations.
