US Flag and Flags of the World
Jun 28th, 2010, 8:41am

I would like to see a more respectful way of showing the USA Flag, according to set rules of display than I sometimes see on cards here at GCU.  I do not wish to impose my own opinion on others sense of creativity, but there are certain lines that should be drawn when it comes to sacred icons such as our flag and the flag of other countries, as they are the symbols of pride, hope, unity and honor of the nations of the world and should be held in high esteem just as would be Christian bibles,The Koran, and other religious books.

Thanks!

Hi Mary,

I totally agree that the flag (any nation's) should be given due respect when displaying it. I followed your link and read the faqs. According to that, it is not to be used on stamps, napkins, cakes, paper products, clothing, etc. It appears that even the US government does not adhere to these rules. Even if they do not follow the rules, I think that designers should not just use the flag as a graphic element. They should think carefully about the placement and do it respectfully.

I think that depictions of flags on the ground, being damaged, thrown away, etc. are out of the realm of respectful.

I am not sure if I have seen any examples of that here at GCU. Perhaps I just haven't been looking for it.

Are there specific issues you have regarding use of the flag? Can you give an example without pointing out a particular card?

Hi Mary Bright!   Cheesy
I'm proud of you, honoring your country and flag!  (Mine too.   Cool)
I'm wondering though, what disrespect has been shown on GCU... I can't recall seeing any use that offended my patriotic heart.  Could it perhaps be that people (myself included) have used merely some red and white stripes along with a few stars as part of a costume and this is what you find offensive?  If so, it is my impression that these are not 'Flags' and therefore not disrespectful in any way.   The official flag has to have 13 alternating stripes (or 15 to represent an old and short lived flag) and the appropriate number of white 5 pointed stars --from 13 to 50-- in the upper left on blue.
(And if I am wrong in this, I hope very much that someone will point me to the correct info.)
Having said all this, I would like to reiterate that I am very proud of any and all who stand up for respect and honor of our flag... Thank you Mary Bright.

Flags are not sacred icons. They are not religious in any way.

I don't give my respect to a piece of cloth with a pattern on it, rather I respond to the people, behavior and beliefs of a particular country. However, I see the fervor that Americans offer to their flag. Maybe it's because I am British, and we have the Queen as a permanent Head of State, to whom we swear allegiance, and give her the respect that you in the US give to the flag.(most of us anyway!) That's a whole other debate!

You say you do not wish to impose your own opinions, while at the same time calling for censorship.

I am sure that CGU would not allow any flag to be used in a manner that denigrated the people who claim it as their standard. I have searched for 'flag' and can find no images that would cause offense. Can you link to the card that has upset you so much?
