I thought I had it...and I don't

Ok, I'm going to have to admit to obviously being extremely dumb on this subject.  I've tried to understand the 3 the same image rule and I really thought I understood but just got two card declined for not following it....  I think maybe my problem is I don't understand what a "category" is.  This might help me...  In this string, which one is the "category"....

Ooo a test Smiley lets see if I can get this right

Occasions - thats the catagory. The others are sub catagories *ponders*

Three rule....

Bridesmaid Thanks
Will you be my bridesmaid-sister-brother-uncle tom etc
Be in our wedding

I want a banana if I actually managed to get that one correct. Usually when I make a wedding card my bridesmaid ones would not fit with any other one, except one instance when it was will you be my bridesmaid, thank you bridesmaid, and be in our wedding. That was my dove one, but the customer requested the be in my wedding.

Weddings in my wikkle oppinion though sometimes could be themed, but you have to watch I guess you do not swamp the system.

1. will you be my bridesmaid -  flower girl - matron etc
2. thank you -  bridesmaid - flower girl etc
3. at a push general will you be in our wedding.

Think that would cover the three rule. Ahh only been here just over a year lol I still don't get it right all the time, but usually that comes when I stray out of my comfort zone.. ie weddings

Hugs
Moonie

Hi, Rita,

Here's a link to a discussion where Mindy explains the 3x rule:

http://www.greetingcarduniverse.com/forum/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1243889143

You might also want to check out the GCU Wiki page (you'll see the link for it at the top right, when you're logged in here.)

In a nutshell, the 3x rule is that you can use the exact same image up to 3x in the same category.

Same image means just that:  Bridesmaid --> General:  Will you be my bridesmaid? (cover text) Pink dress, again with the same dress in blue, again with the same dress in purple.  That's three times.

Change the text on the cover to "Sister, Will you be my bridesmaid?" Now put the same card with the pink dress, blue dress or purple dress (mentioned above) into the relationship specific category for 'Sister.'  The image was used 3x.  BUT, now change the text to 'Cousin,' and create for the subcategory, 'Cousin.'

One thing to keep in mind, is that changing the text on the cover, changes the 'image' (the card cover.)  But one thing that we cannot do is to use the 'image' more than 3x in the same category.  So, I can't use that same pink dress idea (from above) to make 4 cards for the subcategory, 'Cousin' using the text below:

Dear Cousin, will you be my bridesmaid?
My Cousin...  My Friend, please be my bridesmaid
A special request for my Cousin
Please share my day, Cousin
******* I'd have to choose just 3 of the phrases above for the card cover

But, I can use the same pink, blue and/or purple dress to make cards for:

Happy 16th Birthday!  (make one for general, sister, daughter, etc.) or 16th Birthday Party Invite
Quinceanera Congratulations (general plus relationships) and/or Invitations
And of course, Maid of Honor, Matron of Honor, Junior Bridesmaid (general plus all of the relationships)

And you can use the same 'image' that pink, blue and/or purple dress for any other card that you think it would be fitting.  Probably not the best for Grandpa's 80th Birthday, but, I suppose that technically a person could do it.

So the 3x rule is that you can use the image more than 3x, if you do it within the guidelines.

Hope that this helps!  (Hopefully this makes sense and that there aren't too many typos.  It's just a bit early for me on this Saturday.)

DUH!!!  I think I really do have it now and boy do I feel dumb...  It's a limit of 3 the same image period...it doesn't matter what category they are in.   In order to use it more then 3 times I would have to change the image in some way...like different wording.   Yes???

Rita,
Don't feel bad it's awfully confusing. I still have to check myself on that one. Smiley I got it wrong just recently you'd think after a year and half I'd get it right. Guess I'm a slow learner Grin

Hi Rita,
Feel free to post the card pid#'s so we can explain it in light of the actual cards that were returned.

3x allowed for an IDENTICAL image as long as they are in DIFFERENT CATEGORIES
3x variations allowed in the SAME category which includes variations like colors, borders.

Significant differentiation of the image itself allows you to use the basic image nearly unlimited (adding different text on the image like occasion, age, relationship, etc).
