March sales
Apr 1st, 2010, 1:54am

No charts this month as my sales were just a few cards higher than posted for February.  GCU's sales were also flat vs. February.
My sales were up 136% over March 2009.  GCU's were up 53%.  Orders up 47%.
GCU cards per order is back down to the long term average of 2.5 after surging last fall to as high as 4.5 in November.
My per-card commission was 46 cents in March due to one large order mainly.  Running average is 50 cents/card.  I only had one day with no sales. Sales per day appear to be weakening.  Economy?

GCU card submissions are flat at 850 per day, down from a peak of over 1300 per day.
The average store has 183 cards and sells 14-15 cards per month.  This obviously varies widely.

My main highlight is I am 5 cards away from 5000 total cards sold.   Smiley

Hi Tom

Recession forced shopers to be careful I guess, my card number was a bit poor on here Feb/March 148 Chinese new year was my best this time 1165 cards in January *flaming nora did not realise*, hugely different to last Easter my sales were in Excess of 500+ but hey Smiley I sell drip drip so I am happy. But this is just the start of my second year so I can't complain having sold 2597 of cards Since Dec Last year, I hope it is an upward trend like your own (Prays).

Huge congrats on the almost 5k of cards I am sure that will change very quickly and be on the next leg to 6k Cheesy *chinks champers glass and waves cheers arround*

Thanks for the figures always love to look and see what's happening.

Huge thank you and congrats hugs
Moonie

Wow ... congrats to you Tonya ... that's great progress!

In looking over the monthly data I noticed a severe drop in our flagship category "Bridesmaids," from Jan to March, and that this March was lower than a year ago!.  Out of curiosity, I crunched the numbers and made up a graph of the last year of sales in this category (including all the Bridesmaid relationship subcategories).

It seems that although overall GCU sales have grown over 50% in a year, the Bridesmaid invitation sales are generally flat.  As a percent of total sales, these cards have fallen from 10% of total sales to less than 5%.

I wonder if GCU tracks things like this and does any targeted advertising in response.

They should also offer package deals and sets to brides or else they could lose this niche!

Wow that's a large drop, unless Brides have held off during the resession for now, and it has been a long long bad winter we even have snow here again, so perhaps things mount up on a scale and people are being more cautious, less extravagent.

I agree if there is that much of a drop perhaps the new newsletter should carry a lot not just the usual good sellers but a lot of the new bridal cards, a big old posh looking wedding email flyer thingie. All ribbon and lace and things ya know bridal satin etc. Even an unsedualed one slotted in now and then make brides notice more.

I put it all down to a lot of causion but then on the other site my bridal has gone up so it's a bit confuddling why they are flat. Lets go bridal Cheesy there are some stunning new ones as well as the beutiful old favorites.

Just a suggestion of course on the email, aim at the problem areas, and recession.

Shame we cant put a bit of glitter on them or a ribbon *hands glue and sticky things to Shaun to play with * Cheesy

Something us card sellers could do in response to the drop in Bridesmaid sales (if that is your strongest categoy, like me) is use "sell this card" to our advantage and find bridal sites all over the web where we can either advertise for free or inexpensively. Also, you can write blogs specific to bridal cards and articles on other how-to sites, (such as my article on E-how)
This quarter almost tied with my best quarter ever, so no complaints here!

Hi Tom,
Thanks as always for the numbers Smiley

Happily, I did a little better this qtr than the last one, ironically thanks to sales of bridesmaid invitations. Huh and for some reason I had a few surprise sales of very early designs that I thought would never sell, has there been a re-shuffling?

I just crept over my average of one card a day, Smiley I can't seem to get above that but I am attempting to get a blog going and see if that helps and paying attention to what others are doing to promote. I am also taking a hard look at my designs and trying to really improve on the quality of my work. I wish I had more time to put into this but am happy with having, what for me was a good qtr.

Huge Congrats to you Tanya, your work is exceptional!

Well, onward and upward folks!
Pamela

My daughter is getting married, so I've compiled a list of wedding-related blogs. I don't recall seeing anything on the blogs about wedding party invitation cards, but I could have missed them.  My daughter called her friends to ask them to be bridesmaids.  She thought cards were too formal and she wanted to talk about wedding plans right away with her friends.  The groom-to-be used the phone, too. Maybe that's the trend. The bride and groom to be can text or send photos and videos on their phones and get an instant response. Maybe some guest blog posts on one of these sites might help to get cards more in the mix of options.  Maybe GCU can advertise on some of the bridal websites and blogs that take ads.

I had my best quarter ever, thanks in large part to several bulk sales, so no complaints here either! Smiley  I don't sell a lot of Wedding cards, don't have that many to sell actually...so haven't noticed a drop.
I have seen a great increase in sales over last year, which I'm attributing to some promotion on my part, and also I've got more cards now than then....still only have 333 I think though!! Cheesy
For example, last March 2009 I sold just TEN cards...and this March sold 622!! Shocked This mainly due to that large order of 500 I had. (I'd love a few more of those...thank you to whoever sent it my way!  kiss)
This month on both this site and the 'other one' have been great for me....hope it's a sign of the times, and people feeling better about the economy.

I want to say Congratulations to all who have done well, and keep your thoughts positive and persevere to the ones who haven't seen an upswing....things do change, I'm an example of that....I've had some very dismal months, with no sales for up to two weeks sometimes!
So you never know...just keep on keeping on! Smiley

We are aware of this and working on some changes to increase sales in that niche.  There are a number of reasons why this is happening such as increased competition in the paid ad space, and many of the same exact cards are now available on other POD sites like Zazzle, etc.

We do in fact use paid search for this market, it's something we've been investing in for some time now.

One idea is to offer an exclusivity bonus to artists for certain popular designs of theirs.  I do think there are shoppers who see a great card here but go over "there" to buy it because of a number of factors.

I'm sure it goes the other way a bit too.

The reason I do not have a probem offering the same cards here and at Zazzle is because Zazzle charges more. Therefore, I don't think it's competition. My first loyalties are to GCU.

Not strictly true, as I believe you well know. That's fine - you're a free agent, as is everyone. We just can't have it both ways.

I am speaking from what I know, and my understanding is that Zazzle charges more. It's frustrating to me that someone would imply I'm being purposefully misleading. Many of the artists here sell on both sites.

"Both ways" does not translate into "both sites". I am one of the many who also sells on Zazzle. I said, "not strictly true", which was, in fact, my point - which you have not understood. I don't think you are being purposefully misleading. I'm sure you believe what you are saying. End of discussion for me.

Even between two very similar POD sites like CP & Z I have heard store owners complain that a design that sells well on one site has not sold at all on the other, Huh I think that this is down to the demographics of the buyers. The internet is always changing and the marketing that we did last year may not bring in the same sales this year, it is great that so many on here are willing to share what they do and what works for them.
