What fonts do you use?!
Mar 19th, 2010, 10:56am

Hiya,

I was just wondering if anyone has found any good free fonts? I have photoshop and I'm very unimpressed with the fonts that come with it, the curvy handwriting fonts look jaggy and pixelated. Maybe I'm just being fussy!!

I have seen ones on Zazzle I really like and my boyfriend has searched online to download them for free but he can't find them. I can buy it but it's $29..this is the one i like- http://new.myfonts.com/fonts/bitstream/liorah/

Hi Claire

I've collected hundreds of fonts over the years, some with software I've bought and some from free font sites.  There are lots of royalty free fonts out there.

I love your photos.

Best wishes

Thanks very much for all your help, those sites look really good! I will be dowloading lots from them

I have just realised something, when in photoshop if viewing the text at the wrong scale then the font looks pixelated. It's only when you double click on the magnifying glass that it looks ok...ooops so maybe the fonts i already have are ok it's just that i wasn't viewing them at the correct display scale!!

i was just getting ready to tell you about this when i read you had figured it out.    Smiley

i don't know how many things i threw out using shapes brushes and text when i thought they looked jaggy.. only to find out later i was viewing them low resolution.

here is how that works.  if you view your image, text, card what ever at 16.5% ,33%, 66% that is low res and that is when you have jaggies.

If you view at 12.5%. 25%, 50%, 75% or 100% then you are in high resolution and it will be smooth.  IF you take a shape, or brush higher than it was designed it will go jaggy no matter how you look at it.  some text will if you go way above 72 for the font size.. but on a card that is unlikely.

I use optima a lot because it is one offered and I like the continuation of style for the inside of my cards.  I would like it if GCU expanded their listing of fonts,,,

Linda that's a good idea to use the same font on the outside as the inside! I wouldn't have thought of that!

Hi Claire,
Just a note: when you add text in photoshop to a picture, and you open a text box you will see a text layer open in your layers palet.  At this time when you type photoshop is creating vector type. Which will allow you to resize, change fonts, colors ect and the text will stay crisp and sharp with no jagged edges.

Once you "simplify, merge, or flatten your layers" the text that you typed will be rasterized or converted by photoshop into pixels. Once this is done the text may look jagged when resized.

This may not be what you meant but i thought it would be worth mentioning that about photoshop.

I try to aim my fonts towards the person its going to male, female, older, younger, etc.  I also will use larger size fonts incase it is going to someone who is older and has limited eye sight.....
