ideas and amazement
Mar 9th, 2010, 5:24pm

Hi, I was just recalling my impressions of this site before I signed on.  My first impression was that there were so many cards to wade through before finding the style I was looking for that I gave up.  It's not that the cards weren't impressive, they were, it's just that there were so many.

I realize that the sheer number is an impressive stat for the site, but I don't know if it does much for return traffic if cards of a style that appeals to the customer are hard to find.

i'm wondering if this was just my impression, or if others here feel the same, as the last thing we want is to lose potential traffic.

Having said that, i also wanted to add that there is an amazing amount of talent here.  I can't believe how many great cards are here (many of which I never saw as a customer).

Thanks to all who stopped by to say hi and leave comments as well.  I've been able to respond to some but not all, as well as a bunch of the emails before getting swamped with other projects.

Seeing 50-150 ( yep I counted LOL ) of the same card seriously put me off. When you go through around 5 pages and every single one has the same card it makes you seriously consider whether or not it's worth continuing to browse.

A customer looking for a card would pick the category that they want. For example, I want a card for my friend. It is her birthday and she is 21 years old. I go to the category I want, and find the card quickly and easily.

The 'repeats' are not a problem.

You are browsing the site as though it is an art site. It is designed for the customer to find what they want easily. Most customers come through a specific search, and not by wandering about on the site.
This is not a site for vanity publishing. It is a serious business that has been carefully researched and designed.
The customers we serve do not want a message in Comic Sans or Ariel stuck on the front of their card in the nearest color they can find. They want the complete package, with matching fonts and colors. We are specialists, and the customers appreciate it. That is why we have so many cards, and that is why we sell so many!

Norma,

Well I sell plenty!

For a bit a breakdown have a look at Tom's monthly posts on sales and numbers. They are very informative.

I'm not sure if "plenty", or Tom's numbers are representative of every artist.  And i think it's important that everyone has a voice, particularly the amazingly talented artists I've seen here, and heard from, that want to improve things.

Yes, I agree that everyone should have a voice, (including me!).
Have I given the impression that I think otherwise? It was not the impression I intended to give. I simple said the way I see things. Do you feel I should not?

After visiting your store Norma I can see why you wouldn't see so many repeats as a problem.
Personally I came originally as a shopper not a designer and yes i'm afraid that many repeats was a problem for me.
I like to browse around as a shopper and did not come looking for a particular card.
I did in the end shop else where purely because I got fed up seeing so many pages with the same card LOL.
That is why I replied the way I did. My opinion was in response to the original poster.
It is not though an opinion only shared by me.
