Card Sales in the UK
Mar 2nd, 2010, 2:26am

I live in the UK but all none of my sales so far have been to UK customers. Does anyone know what percentage of GCU card sales are to the UK?

Hi there Judy

UK as well here, on the card front for me personally on here I sell mostly to the usa, I do make mum and welsh ones but mostly it's all usa and a few dribbles from the uk and Europe. However on Z it's the total opposite there I make most uk hardly any usa so covers both Cheesy I for some weird reson like selling here better, probably as it was my first site.

Not sure what it's like for others though.

Hugs

Hi Judy
Same here, most of my sales are USA (even Welsh language and the UK patron saints days!) I have only had a few UK sales. I used to sell cards at CafePress but removed them all from there as it was too time consuming making and uploading two different lots (size differences!). I signed up for Zazzle but have so much going on with my photography and spiritual work as well that I only barely get time to upload to GCU, so at the moment my cards are only found here. I also print my own designs to sell locally.

I was reading a blog the other day....the artist from England believe that since so many tiny shops carry greeting cards, there's no reason to shop for cards online in the UK.I lived in various small towns. We dont have that many selection in small towns....nothing like what's available on GCU.

Hi Judy,

I too, on GCU, sell mostly to the USA. However, on Zazzle most of my card sales are to the UK as well as other items...go figure.

Thank you all very much for sharing your experiences. It seems I am not the only one having difficulty making sales in the UK.

I think there may be several factors at work here. One is the cost of the shipping and the length of time it takes. But also, a friend said she would love to buy my cards but only buys British!

But I suspect that it may be mostly to do with our card-buying habits here in the UK. I'm currently carrying out a small-scale market research survey into the way we Brits buy our cards (and what we expect to pay for them) as almost all the statistics I found on the internet related to the US. The results aren't all in yet but it's looking very much as if we as a nation simply don't buy our cards online!

I live in a very small market town in Wales, near the border with England and yet I can think of at least 17 places where I can buy cards within ten minutes' walk, not counting our regular markets! I think that is fairly typical.

I'll be posting the results of my survey on my blog in a couple of weeks' time, if anyone is interested -

BTW, my card sales have been much better through GCU than through Zazzle, where I've only sold two in 3 months! I put it down to the fact that a single card costing £2.25 costs £2.49 in shipping!

I live in USA but am from UK. My opinion is that people in the Uk send a thousand times more cards and there are more cards available everywhere you go.  People i have spoken to there seem uninterested in an online card store and don't seem to see the benefit when they can pick one up almost anywhere and much cheaper.  Charity shops also are very popular and very inexpensive.  If cards at GCU are selling for 2.25 pounds that is much more expensive to start with and the shipping is outrageous.  i cannot imagine anyone wanting to pay that.  The cards should be a lot less and shipping too.  At least equivalent to USA price. Cost alone will stop growth.

People may be uninterested because of price alone.  It would be fantastic to tap into the UK market and the only way really would be to have a print/post center in U.K. that also could handle Europe maybe. (Then if i move back to U.K. i can take my card business with me) Tongue

Have you thought about approaching some of the shops and trying to sell through one of them? I sell about 20 cards a month through a small shop in my town (in the U.S.)

Hi,

I'm a UK artist and have been on GCU for nearly three years, and 98% of my sales are USA. Very few are UK or Europe. I believe it is down to price, Whilst the card price itself is reasonable (even better if I'm buying my own with artist discount!) the shipping is far too high making the sale expensive. It is cheaper to get just as nice cards in supermarkets and cheapo card shops nowerdays, sadly for us. If GCU were to rethink shipping costs, we might get better Europe and UK sales. OR occasionally have a 'deal' which applies to all and not just the USA.  cry

I believe they are missing out here.
