nurses day not nurse's day-don't do what I did!
Feb 24th, 2010, 7:31am

Readers just turned down about 15 of my nurses day cards cuz I used the nurse's day spelling based on my quick look up and seeing the nurse's day card that is in the top line of the front page of gcu's site and in the card category where more than half the first several pages use the nurse's day spelling.

I have let the readers know and it is still up there, so I thought I'd warn anyone who did what I did and just look at that card and the many, many others in the nurses day category that use the apostrophe.

Now I feel if I put up the correct version, No one will buy it as it looks wrong.

The readers are super and have helped me out a lot, so I am not dissing them at all.

I suppose, strictly speaking, it should be nurses' day - and mothers' day, fathers' day.... Wink

Mary,
I have mine as Nurses Day without the apostrophe, I have a feeling I went through the same last year when I submitted them Smiley
I did sell some.

from Wikipedia definition of spelling holiday....

In 1912, Anna Jarvis trademarked the phrases "second Sunday in May" and "Mother's Day", and created the Mother's Day International Association.[1][3]

"She was specific about the location of the apostrophe; it was to be a singular possessive, for each family to honour their mother, not a plural possessive commemorating all mothers in the world."[1]

This is very tricky territory, as it is completely inconsistent, sometimes even within the same source (Wikipedia has "Administrative Professionals' Day" as title and then goes on to eliminate the apostrophe in the ensuing article about the holiday). The page linked to above is interesting but by no means complete. The manual to which it refers sounds like the place to go for all of this.

P.S. I asked several times in the past year for "In Rememberance" under Father's Day to be corrected, but it still stands incorrectly...

Personally, I think here at GCU, cards submitted both with and without in all those categories should be accepted. As Joan pointed out and others in the past, consistency is lacking in this part of the English language and some people may say potato and some potaughto.  Why does GCU have to try and be so literal in these situations?  The English language is considered one of the most difficult to learn and this is just one of the reasons.

I mean really, who honestly cares if the card reads Nurses Day or Nurse's Day?  ONLY the person buying the card and they should have the option to choose cards based on how they believe it should read.  Same goes for Mother's Day and Mothers Day...etc.

Come on GCU, just allow both and let the public purchase cards based on how they would like to see it.

Why can't GCU have a webpage specifying what spelling versions will be accepted? This way we could check ourselves before going through the looooonnnnggggg waiting period for approval only to be told our apostrophe is in the wrong place.

I think this is a very good, constructive suggestion. What about inserting a list into the "Wiki" so that even if the use of apostrophes is a free-for-all in the outside world, we all have a consistent source to which we can refer in this GCUniverse?

I so agree with Doreen and was just about to write my version of it, which is, that holidays are celebrations, time for traditions, not laws, time for high and happy language, not grammar rules.

If we understand the language, it works like this, imho.  The holiday is 'set aside' though not really,
for certain people in the population, moms, dads, grandparents, nurses, veterans, etc.  The day is
'your day', we say.  The day belongs to them, each one and every one of them.  The day is for them
and the day belongs to them, both.

So, yeah, GCU, there is cultural use to be considered.  Even though I have already spent the morning
changing my cards.

I now have time to finish my statement of opinion...Judy is right, it's "mothers' day", "fathers' day", etc,
but we in America find that awkward and never ever use it, as is causes confusion and feels like something is wrong.

Just ask the Jonesesessesssesss! Smiley
