Italics and Quotation Marks
Feb 19th, 2010, 8:15am

Hey all!

Today I had four cards that were needing to be resubmitted for this reason:

Please check the italics around birthday girl and edit. Thanks
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here is my text inside the card, (there are no italics, but there are quotation marks):

TAG! You're it!

You are the 'birthday girl'!

Have a wonderful, Blessed birthday
and enjoy this most happy day,
the anniversary of the day
that you were born!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Do you think my 'quotation' marks around birthday girl is wrong? Misleading? I don't understand why I would have to change anything...I'm trying to convey this:

TAG, you're 'it' - the 'birthday girl'!

(Hence the tags on the front)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am really trying to 'tie in' the fact of using the TAGS on front with the inside verse. Should I just delete the quotation marks and not use them at all, or does that look proper to you? How would you phrase it? I'm afraid I'm not the best at grammar, so I thought I'd give a shout to youse! Wink

Please advise, and thanks for your suggestions!

Hi Cherie,
I think the quotation mark makes sense, but perhaps the reviewer meant that you have 'birthday girl' instead of "birthday girl".  Can't say for sure, but this is just a thought.  Good luck.

Really I don't think the quotation marks are needed in this instance, but it is up to you. The reviewer may have felt that they were redundant, but if you feel strongly about it, I would just ask them so you know for future reference. Hmm...I'm even a little curious now. Smiley Wink

I agree with Kathy, maybe the reviewer felt you meant to have "birthday girl" and thought you made a mistake having it shown as 'birthday girl'.

I would make that change and reply back to the reviewer if it were me.

Good luck!

GREAT points everyone, thanks so much for your help!

Seems I misunderstood what had actually happened on one of my cards, I had missed typing one of the quotation marks!!

But, all in all, I believe taking out the quotations marks will be just fine.

Thank you too, to my card reviewer!
