I submitted cards back about 10 days ago, I think, but they are still not approved. Does it
usually take that long for approval? Just checking. I'm beginning to think I did somehing wrong in submitting them, though it says they are "pending."

I don't blame you a bit for being frustrated.  Had the approvals taken longer than the 4-days I waited when I joined back in April, I may not have had the patience to continue here at GCU.
 
With that said...
 
The approval process is taking 7 or more days right now.  I wish I could tell you why, but perhaps Mindy can offer some input later.  Once you have cards in your store, and are off working on new card designs; as well as working well ahead of the holiday you are creating for, it will no longer matter so much to you.
 
For example I'm working on Mother's Day and Father's Day right now and I'll create a few cards, then go off and work on other designs.  A week or so later I have a surprise in my in-box...Cards Approved! ...and I never even stressed over them one bit  
 
Hang in there, I'm sure it will be worth it!
