giving credit?
Jan 30th, 2010, 9:43am

I do photography and art for my cards, however, sometimes none of my stuff seems to fit a particular card that I am creating. There are a lot of websites that allow commercial use, but they want the user to give a credit line somewhere. Most want a weblink credit. GCU does not allow weblinks. I have not found any way to give a credit. Any suggestions?

Hi there Smiley

When I have used someones pic, I place at the bottom righ of the picture a name credit, usually 8pt smallll ... but it is there and that was the norm when working. I do ensure it's clear though white on black etc but 8-9pt is acceptable as long as it can be made out when the card is printed.

You can place credits : Picture kindly donated by name. On your artist notes as well, but I know we are not allowed to place external links on anything we do, other than our store, it's allowed in there, but not on artists notes n all that Smiley

Hope that helps a little

Since this topic is entitled "giving credit"--
I just received a testimonial complimenting one of my cards.  Since I can't respond to the guest who left the testimonial, I wanted to give credit to Mindy for giving me the idea for the card!  It's one of the few I've sold.  So... Thanks, Mindy!  And if you have any other ideas for me, I'll gratefully  take 'em!  Smiley

If you are able to then contact the person offering the CU product and explain to them that you are unable to give a weblink but would be more than happy to give them a text credit.
I did this for the KatNKDA artwork I have used.
I have a thank you under my welcome message but also give credit in the artists notes on each card I use the artwork Smiley

Be very careful using sites that allow you to download and use images. Very often they don't own the copyright in the first place. Another forum I belong to, for stock photographers, has a whole section devoted to tracing such sites and reporting them and getting them shut down. If you innocently use an image that was from Shutterstock or Istock originally you could be in big trouble, and so could GCU.
Flickr, for example, is famous for people claiming to own images that they have stolen, then allowing others to use them.
I have already warned this site about a picture I spotted that I knew was stolen.

What ever happened to just taking ones own photographs, drawing ones own illustrations and creating ones own designs? . . sigh  Huh  Sure give credit where credit is due (and rightful permission has been given), but doesn't it say right on the Greeting Card Universe logo: "connecting Artists & Card Buyers" ?

. . . just a thought  -'e'

Even stock sites are not infallible, Shocked just over a year ago istockphoto was issued a take down notice by the National Trust of England and Wales, they clamed that thousands of photos had been taken on “their land” Roll Eyes photographers had to prove they were not on NT land or have their photos removed.  cry

Smiley Oh hooray!  Was it the welcome to the family puzzle?  I'll take a peek and see if I have any more ideas for your lovely photos.

Agreed, use caution.  And read the fine print Terms of Usage as many specifically do not allow use on print on demand products.
