website v.s blog - help
Jan 17th, 2010, 10:13am

Hi,
I have seen the posts regarding various blog sites to use but am wondering what the difference is between a blog and a web site?  I get asked if i have a web site all the time.  I don't want to spend a lot of money to create and host one.  I know there are free services out there but there are so many of them.  Do you know a good free create a website/hosting site?  Am I better off with a blog?  I'm not one to really write anything...probably not even on a monthly basis.
any suggestions would be appreciated.
thanks,
stacy

I read somewhere on the web that a blog will get a lot more attention than a 'static' website. I'm afraid I can't remember where I read it or exactly why that's the case, but if I come across it again, I'll post it here.

You don't really need to write much on a blog - a lot of artists seem to mostly just post images (with captions).

I have a mac computer and the apple staff helped me set up a website that includes a blog.  I purchased my domain name (nanwrightart) through GoDaddy.  VERY cheap!  You can check it out to see what it's like at: http://www.nanwrightart.com   They have a variety of templates from which to choose if you don't want to make up your own.
The blog section started out to be a step by step progression of my current painting.... but evolved into just posting new paintings.  It is an easy place to refer people to to see all of my work before going to my shops.  Without the Apple 'geniuses' I would not have known diddly how to do this!

It all depends on what your needs are. You can get a WordPress blog and get the best of both worlds... a website AND a blog all in one.

You can get a free website just about anywhere but the problem with those is Search Rankings.... their clients don't get very good search ranking (i don't care what the company says - they just don't get it like you can get it with your domain).

I offer hosting, domain registration, hosting & design of WordPress Blogs and ecommerce Sites.

My hosting starts at $1.99 per month, domain registration is $9.99 and installation of the wordpress blog/website and/or ecommerce is FREE. Custom design of WordPress or ecommerce is only $30.

For more info you can visit my site at http://wahmdesignservices.com

(and NO you don't have to be a "work at home mom" to take advantage of my services - anyone can use my services.)

I think this article might be where I saw it - or maybe one of the links from it. (Sorry I haven't got time to check all through it at the moment, but it might be useful anyway!)

Hi Stacy,

Websites are harder to add new content to than blog’s and search engines like new content. Paying for hosting is not that expensive and you get to have yourname.com instead of yourname.hostingsite.com, better for branding.  Wink

For free you could try www.webs.com or www.squidoo.com where you can build a lens, a lens is like a one page website. For a blog both wordpress and blogger are good but which one would depend on your preference undecided. For a mini blog I use www.tumblr.com where I only upload images (reduced size) that link back to the sales page of my card here on GCU.  Wink

Also with blog’s you can have them auto post to your social network sits like facebook, twitter and myspace, so when you post on your blog you also get new content on your social site as well Wink. If you look at my blog  www.martinspixs.tumblr.com some of the captions may look a little weird with things like #photo in them but the # followed by a word means that anyone on twitter looking for that word can see my post and not just my followers.  Smiley

Thanks for the guys!  I now think I am leaning more toward the blog than the website.  It sounds like it's easier to use.
Thanks again!
