Display of new cards
Jan 14th, 2010, 12:23pm

Noticed this on New Cards link on home page.
Whenever there are new age/relation/name specific cards with same design, they span over 1 or 2 pages. While these cards are great for customers with specific needs, a customer may not browse more than 4-5 pages if he/she sees same design repeatedly instead of more variety of cards.

I think a better way is to display only one of the age/relation/name specific cards with a note that there are more cards like this and a link to those cards. (This will probably require change in submitting the cards to indicate that they belong to a group). This will give the customer chance to see more unique cards without clicking on next many times.

Hi Seema!

Many of us have discussed the same ideas over the months, so we agree with you.  It seems to either be a complicated change to make, or hasn't made it to the top of the list yet...or both.  So you are in good company with your idea!

I TOTALLY agree... a few of my friends have said it is a real 'turn-off' to see so many pages of the same design.  So I too, hope the change can make it higher up on the priority list very soon.

I totally agree, the change is needed very much.  It is a turnoff.    undecided undecided  rosiecards

I join the club. Some of my friends told me that it was boring to see many pages of the same design no matter how good it was.

I would like to add my support to this, too.  I usually only put one (or two at the most) per card design (or photo, in my case), because everyone knows these cards are easily custom made for specific names and ages.  (forgive me for saying this, and I don't want to sound mean, but birthday cards for every year up to 110? Is it really necessary to pad your store that much?  I would think buyers would be happy to not have to wade through that many repeats even in your store so they could see the rest of your great designs.)  Having sometimes as many as 50+ of the same design showing up in the new cards are making it impossible for the rest of us to be noticed.  I have yet to see one of my new cards in there because I'm not willing to go through all the repeats long enough to hunt them down.

Okay, that's my 2 cents, if it even worth that much.  I'm sorry if I hurt a feeling, but I held off saying something until I saw this thread, and then I had to speak up.    undecided

I agree - I have had the same thoughts when looking at the New Cards link.  It seems that the majority of the cards that show up on that page are duplicates in a category and fill up the pages and I rarely see my individual cards.  it is very frustrating.  The New Card page is just a sampling of the most recently added cards, couldn't the the reviewers (or whoever posts to the page) just add on of the multiples that has been approved as a sample along with individual cards approved to show the broad range of cards that are being added daily?

I joined the club long ago, and I still think one solution would be enabling buyers to customize the front text, too, so they can replace names, age, occasion, or whatever. It would save the artists a lot of time, and GCU a lot of storage...

I AGREE TOO!
I even FEEL BAD when I make 50 of the same ones, because I KNOW what it's going to look like coming across those pages!
BUT, those are also the one's that I sell the most of!
What do ya do?

Thank you for your input.

A few things to keep in mind about the Newest Cards page...
* It is a VERY low traffic page - very few visitors & little to no search traffic
* Cards are auto posted after they're approved - no manual intervention
* It changes every 24 hours
* This is isolated, you will rarely to never see blocks of similar image collections on a category page which is where the shoppers actually shop

This translates into it's not an important enough page for anyone to lose sleep over.

Factors that make this not an easy & quick fix...
* Programming, programming, programming...
* Not easy to provide a way for reviewers to intervene and not a good use of their time
* Not easy to devise a way to denote *others available* and hide remainder of collection

Artist considerations when reusing images...
* Ideally designs should be suited to age, relation, gender, etc.  The image itself should be suited to all of these elements as well as the occasion.  For example a photograph of a pine cone is likely not suited for a laundry list of occasions like birthday for him, birthday for her, i miss you, good luck, congrats on your new baby.  We do not police what is "appropriate" in this respect.  It is left to the artists discretion.  As I often say the shoppers will vote with their $$'s.
* Our intent in allowing artists to reuse images was to allow them to LEVERAGE a design, not overuse it  Sad

37 out of 600  cards in the new card gallery were unique designs on the cards this morning.   undecided  mindy if it is that low of a traffic page, has very few visitors and little to no search traffic.... why keep it?  it is  a source of constant irritation to we "temperamental arteeests  Wink " , some of the customers have complained and takes up a lot of real estate.  removing it would be a simple fix to all of the cons you listed:

why not just have it on one page or just a widget or something and use the rest of that bandwidth space for something else.    Huh
