Image on INSIDE of card?
Dec 7th, 2009, 9:17pm

Greetings!

As I was looking at the inside text on one of my cards, I noticed that there is now a button that allows an upload of an image to the inside of the card. This looks like something that customers only can do at this moment, but, since this tool is available to them, does it mean that the artists will be able to add images to the inside of their cards during the submission process?  Just curious!

Thanks!

Penny-

I saw this too and was curious as we (the artist community) had not been told anything about it (that I know of anyway) yet there it is "live" there for customers to use right now.   Huh  So I uploaded an image for a test, put some copy under it and ordered the card as though a customer.  I'll be interested to see how it comes out.  But I must say, that here too there needs to be a little more explanation for the customers. As though they CAN move the image there is no re-sizing tool and I really think the average customer may not fully understand pixel size and 3.5mg size limitation . . . I mean there've been plenty of artists here that have asked the forum questions about size & resolution!

Sorry guys,  Sad but I think it's a mistake to throw out a new tool like this to customers before our (artists) knowledge of it or chance to test and offer feedback.

It's an interesting development, though it will come with its issues.

1.  Shoppers will upload large images and those beyond 3.5MB.  The system should scale those and have a handle to resize lower.
2.  Shoppers will upload too small images.  The system should allow resizing out to the minimum quality dpi (not sure what that value is actually).
3.  Need a 90-degree rotate, or a free rotate capability.
4.  Customers will immediately want to do multiple images with multiple text boxes for captions.

GCU is always doing something new aren't they!

I have to give them credit; the site has really been "solid" lateley.  I have 130 designs in the review queue with not a glitch along the way.  Perhaps this has given them time to play with new ideas like this, though I'd rather see them work on the advanced shopping tool (superior intuitive search) or a better inside text method.

If the customers can add text on an image INSIDE the card wouldn't it be nice if the artist could add text OUTSIDE?

If the customer can move the image INSIDE the card wouldn't it be nice if the artist could move it OUTSIDE?

Yes, a new feature that has been on the wish list for far too long.  We have implemented a quick and dirty version to allow shoppers to include a photo or image on the inside of their card.  This is a very common request during the holidays particularly for company logos.

For the time being this feature is quite limited (no image manipulations allowed other than placement).

We will be keeping an eye on its usage and make adjustments/improvements where needed and when resources allow.

This is a shopper exclusive feature, not an artist tool.  As such we did not put it out to the artist community for discussion.

Thank you for your feedback & suggestions!  Smiley

Greetings!

Just wanted to say that I tried this out for myself today, adding an image to the inside of one of my cards.  The only problem that I found was when I added the image, it appeared doubled, like double-vision, an image atop an image, but slightly staggered.  I did this two times, once with a jpeg and once with a png with a transparent background, and got the same doubled look.  When I clicked on the large view, the image was clear and not doubled, so, it was just in the edit view that there was a problem.

I'm looking forward to seeing how the card prints.  Smiley

I think that this process seems fairly easy and straightforward for us, but, as one who works with customers every day, I think that the concepts of pixels, resolution, image size, etc. may be lost on many of our card buyers.  Most people do not work with these types of files, and may not realize that a low res scan of the their company letterhead is not 'art,' and that it may not give them the crisp look that they're hoping for.

And, here's another thought, sorry, I don't really mean to go on about this, but, every card that goes out has the Greeting Card Universe logo on it, as well as the name of the artist/designer.  I like to think that every card that I sell is not only a gift for someone, but, also a mini advertisement of my work specifically, and GCU as a whole, with the hopes that the card will inspire more sales.

The person, or company, who eventually receives the final product, one of our cards, will not realize that Joe in the purchasing department added the grainy photo of the office staff to the inside of the card, they will assume that GCU did this.

So, I'm wondering are there any checks regarding the quality of the image that a customer uploads?   I know that there is a disclaimer regarding content, but, what about the quality of the image itself?

Just something that was on my mind.  Thanks for reading!

This is just what I was thinking, Penny AND why I was "miffed" that management didn't put it out for artist's consideration . . . sort of went behind our backs, so to speak.  AND this is not something that we can "turn on or off."  Now I ordered one of these to see just how it would come out and have to admit though I've been a designer for years it did take a few uploads to get a usable image (I was approaching it as a customer) AND a few minutes to get the image placed and text lined up, etc. (the double image thing confused me at first too)  The fact that Mindy mentioned that a "down and dirty" version was put up for customers to use actually offends me because it gives the option for customers to possibly . . . likely. . . . put inferior designs inside a card that I am being represented as the designer of.

I just don't think these "custom" features (all of them) are being introduced and implemented in a user friendly OR artist friendly manner   Sad. . . actually I don't see how they are even GCU friendly if that's indicated by the amount of problems that have been posted. .. . unless there are SO many more sales that ARE going through (particularly bulk - best for GCU) compare to the problems. . . Greetings!

Just wanted to offer an update about the card I purchased with the image on the inside:  It arrived today and looks great!  The printing is vivid, crisp and clear.  And the card is folded perfectly, to boot.  If anyone is interested, I used a png file with a transparent background.  I actually just used the same template for making the card covers, and added my images and text, then uploaded the whole thing.

I think that it would be fun if we, artist, could add our images to the inside of the cards at the time we create them.  I don't know that I would want an image for each card, but, a neat feature would be that we could finally match the inside font to the font that we used on the cover, if we wanted to.

My 2-cents!

Thanks,
Penny Smiley

It would be nice to use .png files on the front also.

Think of the possibilities if we could use transparent .png files on other graphics.

If GCU’s printer can cope with png files on the inside then why not on the front?  undecided

Thanks for your feedback Penny!  With this feature under our belt and once the busy year end holidays pass we will be able to consider enhancements to this upload feature and possible other related features.

Hi-
I wanted to say I received my "pix inside" card too and was pleased, the image and text printed just as I'd hoped on the inside and the outside was cropped well and the printing good. . . I'm not going to say excellent (outside that is) as I had gotten this card before and the printing this time was darker (not a big deal) but it wasn't as "sharp" as before and it was blown up a bit more so that there was more cropped off and this was predominantly at the bottom. (but actually the right/left centering was better)  Again, not big differences, and generally fine. . . just wanted to point that out (most wouldn't notice it at all).

But I did notice something unrelated and that is with the GCU logo on the back:  the "Connecting Artists & Card Buyers" in red seems to be "breaking down."  It's not sharp like before and with this "blurriness" it tends to look unprofessional.  Huh  my 56¢ worth. . .  -'e'

We've just added some image sizing features to allow shoppers to make their uploaded image smaller or larger within certain quality limitations as well as not allowing/displaying an image larger than what will fit in the allowed space.
