Google issue
Nov 28th, 2009, 9:18am

I have not posted for a while...so I hope this issue has not been covered already. Recently I had my name googled by a prospective client and this result (among many) came up:

Adult / Sexy Cards, Adult / Sexy Greeting Cards, Adult / Sexy ...
Birthday Boyfriend. By: Lynne Chrapliwy · Birthday for him. By: Wendy Mogul · Since It's Your Birthday. By: r8r · Birthday - Disgusting Perversions ...
www.birthday-reminders.com/shopping/cb.asp?cid=1485 - Cached - Similar

As you can imagine, it left a very bad impression. I have NO "adult, sexy" much less "Disgusting Perversions..." in my GCU store. Is there any way to have this damaging association removed? Please reply, even if it is to redirect me to Big Dates or wherever. Any help would be most appreciated since I am an independent contractor and can't afford this kind of negative representation!

One of your cards has the keyword "sexy".  This is why it is showing up this way in Google.  You may want to delete that card and start over and leave out that keyword when you resubmit.
Hope that helps.

You do have one card in the Adult category (PID 74578).

Since no GCU card stands alone on its card details page, all the titles and keywords with it's category "neighbor" cards make it into the search engine as a group.

Deleting this card will allow this issue to melt away in time.

Well the question is, do you want to remove the card? That's what everyone is suggesting which is a good idea in order to get your listing removed from google, although I don't see how that's entirely possible, but its a bad idea for sales you may potentially make on the card. That is one way to do it, but do you want to remove your card? Another thing is, I know somewhere at google, you can request that they remove a listing. I'm not sure where this feature is but I've seen it. I once wondered why someone would request that, but now I know why. Another thing is, I'm not sure if its possible to remove it from google because they're every where - they can make even the sites we don't want to see ranked #1 for some crazy reason. So I wish you the best of luck, unfortunately, because its google - you may be stuck. However I don't want to see you remove your cards that you want to sell - maybe remove it, then re-submit it with different key words or ask admin to edit them if that's possible also.

Shanni,

I have to ask this because it bothers me if its what I think it is...

The 20% off banner you have at the top of your GCU store is for affiliate bucks is it not?  All of us artists promote ourselves, that's how we get a following, but to put a banner at the top of your store that immediately sends customers away from GCU, purely for affiliate dollars is, in my opinion, a bit odd.

Can you help me understand the purpose of that banner?  Are you selling your cards there?

Doreen, I wrote you an im because that reply you made back wasn't helping Lynne with her issue and in the future, address me via im on an issue related to me like that, not on a forum where someone else has a completely different issue..

Lynne,

Let me know what happens with Google because some people may have the same issue with card keywords and need to know how to resolve it on google.

Its a cute card by the way and great topic!

Best of luck to you,

Shanni

Thanks for all the replies. I knew it would be difficult to "fix" this problem...I don't want to get rid of the card. My issue isn't so much with "Adult" or "Sexy", but more with "disgusting perversions". Who has cards with those key words? Oh well, if I figure anything out I'll be sure to post. In the mean time...I suppose I'll try the resubmission idea without Adult and Sexy for keywords.

Lynne, since the card you're talking about is likely one of mine, here's the link to the actual card on GCU:

http://tinyurl.com/yhq42oz

As you can see, it's a humorous card, and while the title is Birthday - Disgusting Perversions, neither the humor nor the image is as "adult" as you might possibly think.

Hello Lynne,

We unfortunately have no control over Google's organic search results, and very little control over content that they index from the card details page.  As others have mentioned, if you delete this card it will eventually get removed from Google's listings (this may take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months).
