I pooed a little?
Sep 23rd, 2009, 10:49am

I don't know much about Twitter, but I do know about image and marketing... this does not seem to be something that impresses in a positive way. Perhaps I am wrong.

"I pooed a little" and "Big Beautiful Hooters" are 2 of the most recent entries on the GCU twitter account.

Granted, it looks like it isn't used very often but it still should reflect something positive for the cards here. I think it is great to have the cards here, but I'm not sure that poo is the face to present.

Here is the URL.

If I am just out-of-touch with what really sells these days please let me know.

I don't Twitter, but I did go look at what Whisper was referring to and I have to say, I absolutely agree.  Personally, if a business is going to use Twitter or other type of blog they need to have someone review the posts daily or several times a day and remove those that do not represent the professionalism of the company and it's contributors.

I might be out of touch, too. I totally agree. While those types of "tweets" (or whatever you call them) may seem to draw attention from some people, it might also have the opposite affect for others. I personally wouldn't click on those links. However, because of the post, I did, and the cards are cute, but I'd have never seen them if i was just someone reading that particular page.

Just my two cents, for what it's worth.

Tweets should be with cards that are EXCEPTIONAL in design and that will knock the buyer over when they see it, either by the quality of the art, depth of the laugh, or intensity of the verse.

Frankly, the tweet should not be for one card, but for a special page of the best GCU cards hand-picked based on th criteria above, imo.

The current GCU tweet is for: Birthday Poo

Is it supposed to get people to click the link to satisfy their curiosity about poo? I mean - who is going to do that? Not someone who wants to buy cards.

Things that don't make sense out of context - in this case, it doesn't work without the picture immediately there alongside the text - simply shouldn't be used.

Yours sincerely,
Not impressed of Bristol.

We introduce 14 new tweets a week of varied features - specific artists, specific cards, category/occasion, subject matter, keyword, etc.  It's a bit all over the board to keep up interest and show variety.

Twitter is a forum in which we can push the envelope a bit.  Any card on GCU is fair game.  If the card itself is objectionable we would not approve the card in the first place.  The first objective with Twitter is to get people's attention and entice them to click.  Would we send the same racy messages in an email promotion?  Very unlikely.

These two tweets by the way have received the most clicks to date.  Interest, curiosity, voyeurism...who knows but they're clicking.  These off color tweets are also in the minority of all of our tweets so they are not the standard.

Also followers know that the tweets are Greeting Card related and over time will find that our tweets are not misleading and are not intended to be offensive....we hope they will become "twitterpated" with GCU.

Please afford us a bit of leeway with this new marketing venue.

I get what you are saying Mindy and I think it will be most attractive to the younger tweeters so kudos to GCU for trying  a new angle.  Cheesy

We all know that poo and pee and farts have a lot of laugh factor for the little ones, and honestly, I have been forced to laugh my way right out of a room at times, iykwim.  And although I agree that the card is gross, I bet it gets quite a few half disgusted feelings and half laughter and smiles from more than a few people.

It's a mad, mad, mad, mad world out there!

I think both cards are funny and are great additions to the GC universe, and I am sure those that go look at them find them funny.

What concerns me are the people that don't go look at them and leave with negative thoughts about GCU and it's artists.

I don't twitter, perhaps because porn and scat don't fascinate me as they apparently do those that use it. I doubt I will ever be a twitter fanatic if this is the crowd that uses it. I will leave this area of advertising to those that know it. I hope it brings good things to GCU and doesn't leave an odor.

BTW: if you are going to do the tweets...

The single funniest card of this sort on GCU (in my mind) is this one

You can tweet it as "Hot Sex Secrets"

THANK YOU GCU for utilizing the phenomenon 'Twitter' and for taking the TIME to even begin to promote and ADVERTISE for all of us! In keeping up with all of the newest popular venues and resources for advertising and getting our 'stuff' out there, I know that I just don't have enough time in the day to promote my work and I truly appreciate EVERY and any effort that anyone else makes on my behalf!

I know that it isn't about what 'kind' of art you are promoting, it is about promoting 'GCU' as a whole, and in effect, each one of us. Catching people's attention on the internet (hand-held internet devices too) is a way of life and a difficult job, now moreso than ever because of the amount and variety of www users. Whatever it takes to capture someone's attention and to draw people to our wonderful greeting card shop is ok by me!
_________________________________________________________________

What was that saying, '_ _ _ _ _ _ _ is the spice of life? Everyone has the right to have their work promoted. I don't think one style of art is better than the other or is going to adversely affect people's opinion of GCU. If anything, it shows we are diverse.

Whether you like or dislike funny, gross, sexy, fine art, characterizations, inspirational, silly, serious, sympathetic, wedding, (and I could certainly go on), just doesn't matter! What matters is that WE offer it all here at GCU! What matters is that there are lots of people out there searching for a 'variety' of subjects and we can tap into what they are searching for by using Twitter, watching the searches and tagging our Tweets using those popular search phrases. It's all about advertising, and we all know that.

Now, isn't this wonderful? A free advertising site that is open and used by MILLIONS of people? Why pay to get listed on popular search engines when you can do this for free?

Whether you use Twitter, Blogger, Ning Network, MySpace, FaceBook, Kaboodle, FlickR, or any one of the thousands or millions of websites and chat arenas, if it's free advertising for us, then I say 'GO FOR IT' and I thank you for taking the time, (probably having to pay someone too) to do that for me!!

So, for those of you who do not Twitter, do not chat or use the web in any way to promote your art, sit back and be thankful and enjoy...because someone out there is doing the work for you!
