Cartoon your Artist pic
Aug 20th, 2009, 7:19am

Some artists don't feel comfortable showing off their mug in a photo, but in my view I think buyers love seeing what the artist looks like. It provides a bit of a personal connection and could lead to a strong following and more sales over time.  I'm hoping to find one fan who will say "Oh, it took me a while, but I now have all of Tom's cards!"  Grin    I can dream can't I?

One solution is to turn your best mug-shot into a cartoon to use as you back-of-card pic.  I found one site ( http://www.befunky.com/ ) that does this for FREE and has lots of options from full color, to a B/W  sketch, to some really funky mixes.  It's easy to play around and explore the various effects.  Simply upload a photo and download the result.  No name or email required.

Here is my mug-shot and the cartoon version as an example.  There likely are other sites like this out there too.

You can even use a photo from your peak glamour days if you want, assumimg your not still building up to that  Wink.  Could be fun!

I'd say use a full face shot, bright image, and a light background for the best results.

TOM

HI Tom, Nice cards by the way! Your pic is not a cartoon, it's posterization of your pic. Sorry, I've done this vary same thing in Photoshop. Caricatures are different also. Just silly.
Cheers,
Steve

Cheesy Great minds think alike!  I've already done something similar to that!  This is what I use for my back of card pic:

Think anyone else would be interested in having their face on a coin?   Wink

Hi Tom!  Fun idea, for the guys anyway.  Sorry to say that I feel the world is a bit too creepy sometimes to have a photo on all my cards (in your example you are still quite recognizable).  I would much rather have my logo.  Perhaps it's because I was stalked by 'a fan' who found me at a gallery opening which was a bit frightening.  I wouldn't recommend it for women.

But, that's just my opinion.  Grin

Thanks, Tom.  This is fun and easy and not just for portraits.  In fact, I need to shut off my computer now and step far, far away before I posterize everything!

I just tried this with my mugshot and it turned out really neat. Lots of options. My mind is going crazy trying to think of things to play with.

thanks for the tip,

I'll draw my own thanks!  Wink

I was going to use this 'cartoon' of me for my GCU avatar but decided against it...

And went for something more cartoony rather than comic book-ish...though if you look at my storefront banner you will see the image...

If anything you can 'South Park' yourself...that's pretty easy...
