Hi Moonie...

I feel your pain there... had a computer meltdown myself - not as dramatic as yours but enough of a headache.  I was on with tech support in order to learn how to go into "safe mode" to be able to recover and back up files I had not done.  I normally try to back up at least once a week and even then I should do it more often considering all the work I have done (photos, fractal art, cards, etc).

Hopefully you get back up and running soon and maybe you will be able to save some of the lost work.

Oh, Moonie,  sorry about the loss of work.  Yes, lessons sometimes are sure learned the hard way.   Those of us who wear belts as well as suspenders have learned from bitter experience.

Tawnya,  I feel your pain, I hear you and I have another word of warning...works on cds and dvds are not as permanent as we once thought.  Every five to ten years, depending on the quality of the cd or dvd disc, put your data on new discs.  They do loose noticeable quality, just like the old cassette tapes.

At least you can be thankful you have enough talent to moving forward with your creativity!

Bummer Moonie!  Been there done that, more than once.  Listen guys, word of advice.  I have been using a computer since the '80's' and over the years lost more data than any one creator should in one lifetime...but then I got smart!

Get yourself a USB External Hard Drive, they are actually very affordable these days.  Anywhere from $100 for one with a TeraByte of space to $50'ish for 400GB. I highly recommend Western Digital brand because I have had three of them for years and years.  Never had a corrupted file, never lost any files, never crashed.  These things are brilliant.

Why get one?  I have these plugged into USB ports on my computers.  ALL files I create, whether my art files, business records or letters to sis are saved on my external drives.  I NEVER save files on my computer's hard drives.  We (hubby and I) also have a 100 TeraByte external drive attached to our home network which provides additional backup for both of us.

So the benefit of these drives are this...WHEN your computer crashes and it is when not if, the only thing you lose is your programs which if you are legal, can easily be installed on a new computer; and if you don't backup things like web favorites, address books and the like, you will lose those, but you will never lose your creations.  Also, heaven forbid if there is every an emergency evacuation you can quickly unplug your external drive and take your 'life' with you.  I even have our family photo album on there in addition to many other things that aren't related to my art.

Just passing on what works for me!

I heard the same thing - in fact, I recently had an external hard drive added to my computer after it melted down and transferred all my images and photos to it as another form of back up.  After doing some research, I learned the same thing about the CDs and freaked out... several of mine are just on the cusp of needing to be replaced - so I'm frantically looking for a sale on CDs to do this project.  However, there are new CDs available and from what I have read - they have a 100 year lifespan - they are 14 carat gold plated and somewhat expensive but are reported to be able to withstand assorted conditions (heat/humidity, cold) far better than standard silver CDs.  I know once I cull my collection of photos (I have in excess of 10K wildlife images - many bad, some good) I'll be looking into purchasing a set of those for a more permanent archive and use the regular silver CDs for every day use.

Also, if you have a trusted family member or friend, it might be worth making a set of CDs and have them stored 'off site' as well.  I remember this from the company I worked for - we kept a set of discs in house for reference and a dup set stored off site in a security vault.  In case of a fire or other disaster, if you can't get to that External to bring with you - you still have the option of those discs stored off site as an additional method of back up.
