doesn't Smarkle GCU Dinkle
Jul 14th, 2009, 7:44am

Don't you hate garbled messages? What if you got a garbled card? Happy Birdday, or Best Washes?

I just heard from a friend that said we have some terrible, garbled foreign cards.

I'm embarrassed.

Worse than that, what if someone got a card like that? They would not think GCU was the place to buy cards from. They would view us like we view the cheap, funny, poor translations that come on some products.

When a customer buys a card in a language they don't know they are trusting us to have a valid translation!

We have talked about this before, we know the online translators don't do the job elegantly, what is the solution?

Last time I proposed a separate "review" process of some sort, a vetting by a native speaker. I know it is a pain, but every lost customer is a pain to all of us.

I think most artists that make these cards are doing their best, but we still have lots of bad translations.

Any suggestions?

I would love to make cards in other languages other than English or Welsh, it would be nice to have a help section for Belgian (Flemish) and Dutch, French, German, Sweedish, Danish. I have a lot of friends from all the countries but I never like to ask and then we all werido sence of humour's so I can imagine what some of them would translate for me, so checking haha would be needed.

I am dyslexic so if someone sent me a garbled birthday it would take me ages to see it, actually make hillarious cards for dyslexic's waiting for the penny to drop.

Even if it's:
Happy Birthday - Wishing you a wonderful Birthday.
Happy Anniversary - Congratulations to a wonderful couple.

Just standard little things.

Hugs

GCU or some accurate authority could put in a forum section some reference basics for the languages used.

In fact, I would like to see a tutorial on how to create a card with standards that would give examples of cards that are really artistic in that each card matches the image, the greeting, and the text inside.   Oh, don't fret, I am sure I have cards myself that don't quite meet all my own standards and I am working on that! I am even removing cards that don't come up to speed.  Slash, slash and off with their heads!

Sometimes I get tired or distracted and just push on, just to have a card  up, but I really need to
spend more time on each card and ask myself these questions.
Who will buy this card?
How can I make this card better?
Did I put in too much?
What should I leave out?
Does the image match the holiday or occasion?
Does the text match?
Am I staying within my understanding of design, meaning, area of life experience?
Can this card be seen well?
Would I buy this card myself?

Oh,well I think I did just give a tutorial on card creating.  If you learned something, buy one of my
cards for payment!  hahaha!  Just kidding.  It's a free lesson from me to you...I am sure I have learned
something from you or soon will.

I tend to design on a whim, I design what I like, which is rather off the wall admitedly, but I love to push myself and twist and turn to keep it interesting for me, I never think of sales, I guess I should really, but I tend to design from my inspiration in the morning then run with it. Sometimes it works a lot it does not Cheesy and oddly I designed a card I hated with a passion loathed it there is no strong word for the dislike and I sold 500 perhaps I should design ones I hate Cheesy

But it would be nice for Whisper's suggestion of basic languages and that would make easy checking, and you get a whole lot more people in Europe for example purchasing cards with the respective languages, it will take a while I am experiencing slow then fast on Welsh cards, but eventually word of mouth and back of card designs push you forward, so would love to expand on that part.

I go without Welsh sales for months, then bam 20 a time go. So all is good and I would guess it would be equaly up and down for other languages. But we are being more diverse and giving your designs to a wider audience, that has to be good even if slower.

I think it would be great if, like Whisper suggested, we could have some sort of a separate review process where native speakers would review the submitted cards. I wonder how GCU feels about this?

It might also be good a good idea to have a help section with basic expressions in foreign languages. As has been discussed several times before, online translators are not reliable.

I really hope GCU will do something about this. I don't know how well the foreign language cards sell, so this is probably not on the top of your to do list, but the idea that we have cards out there with bad translations on them is really quite embarrassing.

Perhaps it would be as easy as checking a box saying "this is a foreign language card and I KNOW the translation is correct",  if the box is unchecked the card would be held until someone looks it over.

One of the reasons we have a review process is that even native speakers can make grammatical or spelling error. If an English speaker can submit a card in English that has errors, errors they can see and correct, imagine how many can be in cards submitted by people that can't even read the language.

I love our great variety of cards and categories and I don't want to stifle anyone, but I am worried about the impression we give to the buyers.

We understand the issue discussed here and it's really two fold:

1) There is a market and opportunity for foreign language (non English) cards.  Many artists want to participate and offer foreign language cards even if they are not familiar with the language.

You've got to do what you are good at especially when creating something for sale.  We are not saying don't branch out but you do need to master something and have some level of proficiency in order to execute it well.

Ideally for any product, artists should create what they are confident with and proficient in.  If the artist is not confident in the language then they should not create cards for that language.  Or they should keep it very simple and use only brief and somewhat universal words and phrases (Merci, Adios, Ti Amo, etc).

2) Cards on GCU should be error free, and translation errors in foreign language cards display a poor quality product that reflects poorly on all cards and artists.

We agree and although we scrutinize cards in English as best we can, we do not do the same for non-English cards.  English cards are by far the bulk of our sales and our sales opportunities.  Resources and certainly language skill level do not allow GCU to review and verify foreign language (non English) cards.  Ultimately the vision is for GCU to be community managed where tasks like card reviews and category "policing" would be done by the artist community itself.  That would allow having qualified language "experts" in review roles however this is a very long time away.

GCU does not plan to provide foreign language translation services, verification, nor tips & suggestions.  Content creation is up to the artists - that is your skill, your value add, your expertise which will earn you returns.  Just as we would not offer how to's or tips on other topics like photography, Photoshop, calligraphy, etc.... being a resource for languages is not something we plan on providing.

As discussed before all foreign language cards should include an English translation in the Artist's Notes field so shoppers know what the card says.  This is optional but could be the difference in getting the sale or not:    http://www.greetingcarduniverse.com/forum/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1231881735

I'm sorry to say but this is not on our wish list Sad

Is there some way for those that know a language to anonymously let artists (or GCU) know that a card is wrong.

I know that many people are reluctant to do so and potentially start a problem with an artist.

Conversations that I have had with some of our artists that know other languages reveals them to be wonderful and helpful for the most part, but anyone can get their arm bitten off if they stick it in enough artists lairs.

We all want GCU to be viewed in the best possible light. It is to the benefit of us all.

Although I think most artists welcome and appreciate feedback re: an error, for those of you that want to stay anonymous you can send a message through the storefront Testimonials as long as you are NOT logged in.  This will send the testimonial as a Guest.

Otherwise you canus the Contact Us link in GCU's footer and we will contact the artist:

Thank-you Mindy,

I think that no matter how "gentle" an artist is, it still smarts when someone "touches" our art --- and even if they are right we initially want to defend it like a mother bear defends her cubs.

The first reaction is never rational, it's always emotional.  Smiley

I think if you word it correctly then most artists will take it as you are trying to help them, not that you are criticising their work. Just last night I noticed an error on a card of one of our most popular sellers at GCU and brought it to his attention. He fixed the error and thanked me for it...no problem at all.

If we don't tell someone something is wrong then it will never get fixed and they will never be aware of it.
