Reminder emails
Jun 11th, 2009, 8:48am

I just received an email reminder for Father's day, and I am not sure what to make of it. It seems to me that the same artists are featured every time, when there are many designs just as good or even better. Does no one look at these reminders before they go out?
This reminder had nine cards from one shop. That really is unfair. It smacks of favouritism and unfair trading.
I also saw multiple images from other shops.
Surely it would be fair to have only one card per shop represented? This would also give the customers a much better variety to choose from.

Norma, I totally agree with you! What's up with these reminders, I don't have a lot of cards out there, but I do think everybody should have at least one on the reminders page.
Cheers,
Steve

Since I am new here, I honestly do not know how my card got on this email.  I will say that before this email went out though, that I have sold a dozen of my Father's day cards to other people already and this may be why?? I also had my top selling Mother's day card go out on a reminder, but it was only after over a dozen or so had sold, then I never got any more sales after the reminder email.  Sad   I hope there are no hard feelings, and once again I do not know how my cards got on the reminder other than maybe they are selling well????  I have never been on any other reminders other than that and I am always happy to see other artist cards as well.  I hope everyone sells lots of Father's Day cards.  Have a happy day.  Smiley

A promotional (save 20 percent off...)  email I received from GCU on June 10 was designed much better than the reminder email of today.  It was much easier to navigate than the reminder email and displayed the wide range of categories and mentioned the VAST number of available Father's Day cards, which is GCU's strength.  I hope future reminder emails are more like the customer-friendly promotional (save 20 percent...) email of June 10.

Jami is probably right that her cards are on the reminder pages because they are already proven sellers.  It would be interesting to know whether the selections are computer-generated and whether a human should intervene to mix it up.

I've had a Father's Day card featured, and it never sold after it was featured, so maybe it's like being on the cover of Sports Illustrated.  You never win another tournament, ha, ha.  But I still liked being featured that one time, so I'm not complaining.     Grin

The process of cards featured in reminder emails is automated.  We do not review nor intervene on these suggestions.  They are...

1) not identical, there is some randomization (different cards may appear in the same reminder for different recipients)
2) based on matching & rankings relative to the reminder
3) not limited by artist name (multiples can occur)

The email reminders feature not only paper cards but ecards and gifts too.  The intent is to capture the recipents attention enough to click, anywhere, get them to take some kind of action for the occasion.

The cards featured in promotional emails are hand picked and with a focus on just paper greeting cards  we typically featured a larger range of cards, categories, artists, styles, etc.

Hi Jamie,
When I looked at the email after reading this I have to admit I felt for you remembering the last go around! Wink
I see that Mindy confirmed that all emails are not identical, I had thought this was the case since Norma's descriptions did not equal what I saw, which means that there are more cards and artists featured.
I hope all those with featured cards will sell lots of them and it will not be as you and Catherine noted, to no advantage.

Okay, so Mindy explained everything well (THANKS so much).....looks like it is the computer that likes my cards.  (Ahww my cards have never been handpicked for the other kind of emails that are sent Cheesy   So, now everyone knows that GCU and/or editors are not hand picking my cards on the reminders, it is all the computer's fault.  And to think how many times I have cursed the ole computer......I will start being much nicer to it LOL.  Yeah, as Catherine said, when you are making lots of sales somehow your cards get publicity...then after the ad hits......not much happens with that specific card.  So don't let it worry anyone, what the ads do is remind people of the important event and as all ads do it always prompts them to view other cards.....I rarely have ever purchased anything on the front of any ad that I have ever recieved.....I search around until I find what I am looking for.  I wish Happy selling to all my new friends at GCU.    Wink   Happy day!

Jami, I did not intend to target you in my post, I was more annoyed at the construction of the email.
Mindy has explained how they are made, but I still don't like it. According to what Mindy has posted, one shop could in theory have every place in the email, and nobody is checking to stop it happening.
They are a shop window, and seeing the same image used repeatdly must make customers feel we have not a lot of variety.

As to buying from emails, lots of people do. I did today, I ordered an item from a company called 7dayshop. They email me regularly with offers, and I sometime take them up. I am sure I am not the only one!

Hi Norma,
I didn't state that nobody buys from ads (see above), I said that most people don't buy the item on the front cover of the ad, most times those items get forgotten about as people get curious as to what else they might find and they start searching around.  These ads are meant to promote sales of all cards and if there were any statistics I bet you would find that more sales are generated from other cards than the ones listed.  Just something for you to think about.  I don't think it is very nice when people on here criticize anyone else's cards or say that there are better cards on here than others.  It is funny, that sometimes a card that you just don't get or that is plain or simple may get tons more sales than the card that took a month to create, it is about hitting a cord or getting the right topic, color, words etc.  I just think we should be careful in criticizing other cards as many people have really put a lot of time, thought, heart and passion into each and every creation.

I have a silly question about these reminders...lol,
Does GCU send these to use to remind Us,(The artists)....or for us to send to family and friends to remind them?
and if the last is yes...
If I forward the one I get in my email, and I am logged in...does that mean they can get into my account from these reminders?
Or am I just logged in on my own computer? Always been confused about this.. I don`t want my account info. out in the open.
Hope this makes sense.. Smiley

I was floored when I saw I made the reminder.. Smiley

Hugs, Janet Lee

Jami,

Please don't put words into my mouth. I never criticized any cards. I was talking about the selection process for the mailshots, not the cards themselves.

Norma, thanks for asking the question about Reminder Emails. It is not a slap to question that process. It does smack of favoritism and unfair trading when, out of over 2600 artists, only a very few are chosen. Now that we know that programming is to blame when only a few artists are repeatedly chosen, maybe it's time to change the program.
