Thank you Kathy ... I really don't come here often and I hadn't looked at the watermark in a while ... but the watermark was on my cards the last time I looked at them.  Well today it's not.  Can someone please tell me how to turn it back on???  I sure as hell can't figure out how.

 
 
OK I figure out how to turn it on ... but I have to ask GCU to turn back on something I never wanted turned off in the first place!
 
Yup, I don't come here often and I don't keep up with the lastest news and sillyness that goes on around here ... and I am sure Mindy will figure out a way to say this is my fault ... but I am hopping mad anyway!  
 
The watermark should be a default setting the artist can turn on or off as they choose!

If you think your art is worth it, you should register it to be able to sue for damages. But if you're not even willing to pay to register because it's expensive ...

Think about what you are saying ... willing isn't the issue ... being able to afford it is.   The Orphan Works act is a mess.

Agreed, Deviantart.com is a great site.  I just spent nearly 20 mins clicking on incredible art yet did not come across a single one with a watermark.  Interesting to note as well that they do not have right click disablement.  What is it about their image protection practices you would like us to take a look at?
 
GCU respects the different opinions and preferences of our artists.  We give great importance to our image protection practices and are in the process of improving them with the new bi-level watermark setting and the new watermark itself.
 
The watermark is a setting in Global Preferences that all artists can turn ON or OFF as they choose.  However the application or removal of the watermark itself to EXISTING cards can not be done automatically.  Regenerating the images is a CPU intensive process that if artists changed their watermark settings ON and OFF willy nilly could cause performance issues.

Hi Mindy and everybody!
Now I'm feeling a bit lost and am wondering what would work out the best: watermark or no watermark.
Some say a watermark does not harm or detract, others say it does. Sometimes a watermark bothers me, as it does not always look nice, and on the other hand it protects the image, but on the other hand, by buying a card and scanning it everybody can copy ......... undecided
Now I'm thinking, maybe it's best NOt to have the watermark, as Tom pointed out that, although the image appears big on the monitor, it is only wallet size when printed.
On the other hand, if the watermark clearly states that it will not appear when the card is printed.......???
My original intent in posting was the fact that although the message popped up, I could still download, and I thought that was a glitch that could be easily corrected.
 
I'm rambling......I'll sleep over it and then decide what to do about the watermark.

Right clicks on all images have been disabled.  No message is presented, no drop down appears, all actions are blocked with the right click.

Would like to report that the right-click function was indeed disabled on all of my attempts with Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Safari browsers. However, not such good news about the Opera browser. I am about to send an e-mail with more info...

I cannot download anymore!
I agree with Tom that if anybody really wants to copy, all they have to do is buy and scan a card, but disabling the download right click makes things also a lot more difficult.

Sorry to say this, but I am still able to copy with Internet Explorer right click.  I am using the Vista Operating System.

Opera is not likely a browser we will make special programming efforts for.

Hi,
I can still copy "large view" of any of our cards - I click on the picture (with left button on the mouse) and drag it with left button on the mouse to the browser - it will appeared in new tab and I can do everything with it - post it, copy it, save it, ...
I can do this in Mozilla Firefox and in Window Internet Explorer.
Unfortunately for us - Anyone can steal anything if really want to do it!

In view of the person who was stealing images for her digiscrapping, it appears that the copyright protection does not work. Any ideas as to what can be done about preventing such theft in the future?

Your best bet is to use an image protection watermark so your images themselves are marred, however that is not foolproof as some thieves will crop parts of the image that they want that is not touched by the watermark itself.
