if you follow my link in the first post you will see that i sell my cards, postcards, bookmarks, ornaments etc in a store in our downtown area.  local images, photos, art are what sell.  i take photos of our historical sites, or tourist interest spots and use them on my items.

get well, birthday, all occasion do not sell, only the local images are of interest to those who come into the store to buy my cards.  they can get the all occasion cards anywhere, i am the only one selling local interest items.

Hello again Nan, Smiley
I believe Denise is referring to the cards that she sells in her home town. The biggest sellers for her (and I have heard others echo the same) are the ones with local scenes on them.
I think when people talk about local sales on here they mean those we make in and around the areas where we live, often through local retail stores or at local events.

I can certainly concur with Denise about local art.  It may be more of a 'marketable product' in rural areas which are tourist 'hubs'.  I owned and operated a gallery in the small town of Volcano, California for nearly 8-yrs.  We are in the heart of the Motherlode and my gallery was on the way and only a few miles outside of the famous Daffodil Hill.  I sold hundreds of cards, prints and framed pieces during those years and without calculating the official numbers, I'm sure it would be a safe guess to say that over 75% of those sales were always of a local subject/theme.  People who live in the area like to send cards of their area to others and people who visit like to have something to remember it by.  It's a win, win.

when using local themed images for the cards, what is the best way to approach local vendors to sell them?  As a total newbie, do you have your cards printed through GCU, buy them and then take those to a local vendor or have your cards printed by a regular printing shop (and I know the local Kinkos and Photocopy place both will print cards as well as the camera shop a few towns over).

And when making cards of such local sites (I know our town loves to boast of certain areas in town), do you create birthday, holiday, get well, special occasion etc cards as usual or go with general cards?

Denise,
What a wonderful website you have. AND, a fellow Zazzler (www.zazzle.com/elizdesigns*). I left a message on your wonderful gallery.

One of these days I'll get the nerve up to take my floral and other photography photos and cards to local vendors.

keep up your great work,
elizabeth
