Card Price for Local Sales
Apr 4th, 2009, 3:14pm

Hi,

I am considering buying some of my cards and selling them locally in two places that take art from area artists on consignment.

Those of you who are already doing this, what retail price are you selling them for?

I did a test on a Valentine card, putting it  at $4, and it sold. Is it possible to go higher?

Anyone have experience in selling blank cards in a set. What is the going retail price?

Thanks!

Hi Audrey,

I'd love to hear from others on this as well.  I've thought about doing the
same thing to a few local shops and was wondering what an appropriate selling price
would be.

I'm thinking a lot depends on what area you live in and are presenting your cards for one
thing.  Perhaps there are some shops close by that you could visit and see their card prices
for work similar to yours?  I think that is what I'm going to have to do.

I love your cards BTW!!  Just beautiful.   Smiley

I have been pondering the same thing.  I am thinking $3.95 plus tax.  As long as they keep up with the free shipping and artist promos.  Only thing where i live there are a gazillion artists.  Everywhere i go, others have got there first.  I don't see any priced $4.00 and over. But also if the store takes their cut, can we make a profit?

I'm with Valerie on the $3.95+ tax for a printed card.  You want some profit, but you also want to sell cards.   Wink Of course it depends too on whether you are doing consignment or the retailer is buying them outright from you.  I live in a summer seasonal vacation area, more than half the shops are closed in the winter.

Stores are just beginning to open and buy local stock that wasn't arranged last fall.  Like it is  everywhere, folks are being more tentative about buying.  I've sold my "hand made" cards for upwards of $5.00, but in the more so "gallery-like" shops than the traditional vacationers' souvenir shop.  I would like to try selling more printed cards, but I always consider shipping, as it isn't ALWAYS free. I take samples around and find that a majority of the shop keepers want local scenes, local humor, local icons AND like to see something about the hopefully local artist/photographer on the card.

Decide ahead of time if you are going to do consignment, have them purchase from you or go to the website.  Get some business and or post cards printed up that you can leave that have YOUR store URL.  If you're doing the footwork, you want folks to come in the front door of YOUR store.  It's difficult to make reselling GCU cards lucrative, but it is a good way to get your stuff on local shelves with out a lot of upfront output.

i was also wondering the same thing - there are some local festivals i would like to go to - i thought they would sell higher there than at a local store

can anyone tell me what a 'usual' arrangement with a shop might be like?

Hi Louise,

Some shops will buy outright. Many  take art work , cards, etc, on consignment. The percent can run anywhere from 25% to 40%. Gallery settings usually are on the higher end.

Some what to know the retail price, while others what to know how much you want & then they mark it up.

When I was in Sausalito they would pay twice as much as they do here in the center of the country. One of the prices one pays for living in the doldrums region.

Good luck all, let us know how things go and the reactions (and SALES) you get.

I only buy mine from GCU when there is a free shipping offer, and I sell mine for 3.29. But the lady who lets me sell them at her shop only takes 50 cents commision for each one.

All the advice in the world won't do any good unless everyone comes from the same place. Prices are different in different locales.

We live in a small town and prices here for stuff of this nature tend to be a little lower than cities. I'm also in Canada...prices for paper goods are more in Canada than they are in the US.

My cards from GCU sell for $4.00 locally (almost all other artists in this area - and we're pretty heavy with artists) sell their cards for $4.00, regardless of where they come from.

My cards from redbubble, which cost a heap more than GCU's cards, sell for $4.75. (all that is Canadian pricing).

They do sell, but sometime's it's a fight because the dollar shops sell some pretty nice cards for $1.00.

What sells best in my area are the cards that have local images on them. People seem to really like the cards that have pictures from town on them as opposed to generic artwork. Basically, I order my cards for resale based on that.

Like Angela, I try to place my orders when there's a free shipping promo.

some of you know i sell locally too, and originally set out with a two sided card stand that held 32 designs or more.  i went heavy on the all occasion cards and light on the local cards because that is what i had at the time.   the all occasion for the most part are still sitting there, untouched, i am going to put them together as sets in the next week and mark them down.  but i cannot keep the local stuff stocked in some designs.  look around you if no one else has local stuff that is what people want.  as gracey said you can get all occasion cards everywhere for a dollar and up, but local interest is a niche that you need to grab.... and find someone willing to display them for you.

Norval as far as the sets selling locally, i haven't tried these yet.  i have some others i have sold as sets and they did fairly well but they were linen art cards and as you say pricey, because linen cardstock is expensive to print.

i am not on cafe press, it seems there has been a mass exodus there anyway, they changed the artist commissions.  so many people have left.

my best sellers locally are postcards.

be sure and consider all your costs.  our neighboring city art guild had a 25.00 annual fee and they got 30% of the sale. they were only open 20 hours a week.   i had to raise my prices to 4.25 each and 25.00 a set of 8 ,on my linen cards to break even and sold very little, it is an artist saturated town.  after having an art show there and being about 1000.00 in the hole i left there and found someone in my downtown area.

now where i am is a local antiques and collectibles store.  i barter with the owners, doing promotional signs, blog, newsletter, etc and my space rent is very very low.  i have all my framed art, greeting cards, postcards, book marks, and note cards prominently displayed at the very front of the store.

again consider as i said in the other post, doing local scenes and historical areas of interest, all occasion cards are just not as popular.  be sure to let it be known a local artist is selling cards, we had a story in the newspaper, and newsletter and the owners constantly let it be known i am a local artist.

Smiley Very interesting thread! For people who design cards dealing with flowers for instance, you might want to try a Florist shop as it fits right in! Some shop owners are very receptive as greeting cards are a great sideline! By the way blank cards are most welcome! It is difficult to sell any card over $4.00 unless we are dealing with a "genre". I know some famous "fantasy" artists who are selling for as low as $3.50 these days! Of course they take advantage of high volume discounts!

I've been very interested in this thread; the suggestions are great, and I may approach some local florists with blank cards (thanks, Denise!).  Offering cards with local interest also seems a smart way to begin.

Question:  Do you who sell locally supply some sort of display or do the shops take care of those details?  If you supply the display equipment, what do you use?

My cards can be a bit strange, but there may be a market not yet tapped - I'd like to try, but I want to appear professional and have all possible roadblocks removed.

Any suggestions are most welcome.   Cheesy
