Excellent, in my view, this latest evolution: seems to me to answer all criteria (and has been fascinating to watch taking shape). Great work, Tom, and everybody else who has been contributing.

not to argue with Nasser but only as a point of reference here is my design thought moved up to the middle of the card.  simply for comparisons.  and thank you for your comments kathy.

One of the reasons I suggest there be a bit more copy or narrative about either the artist OR the image is that I believe there will also be more and more small retailers buying directly from GCU, just as there are now more artists buying their own cards to sell to retailers. This kind of copy (it has to be interesting and tell a story - the back story) is a selling point for a card on a rack. It is part of the personal touch that connects the buyer to the creator of the card. It is one reason people want cards directly from artists. People hunger to be connected to the source. I am not talking about something that says 'buy me'. It should be 'added value'. Just keep this in mind for the future.

I'd actually like to have that as an option too.  Perhaps a short paragraph in light small italics print under the artists credits.  I think it can be made to look classy and professional. Hmmm .....

I think Denise's design is best.

It needs to look uniformed not cluttered like all of toms. Scattered everywhere and so many different things can only confuse a buyer and frankly it looks a mess. A consumer would be confused by all the different info. Plus that forest logo says copyright 1996, i would then think the card was designed in 96 not 2009.

With denise's all centered and clear, it makes for a clean look.

I still like Denise's best.  It is classy and professional looking without being chaotic.  Everything in one place in the middle.  It is simple and to the point and covers all the bases.  Nothing against yours, Tom, but having everything in one place is a big plus to me.  Hers (denise) just looks more organized.

For what it's worth, I also like Denise's best. I agree with Gina, it's classy and professional without looking like my desk at school, piled high with no desktop showing!  Grin  The more logos there are on the back, the messier it looks.

Wow ... you guys and gals have been busy bees!  So much going on here -- all part of growth and success!

First, Nassar, thank you for your consideration of the BOC promotion.  It was a good idea to try it, but the problems it created were serious enough to offset any marginal increase in market exposure it might have afforded.  The mark of all successful businesses is to take small steps and calcuable risks, and be flexible enough to shift and adjust to the effects.  You're right on target in that regard, IMHO.

Tom and Denise ... great job to both of you on all the work that you've put into the BOC redesign!  Very impressive!  Sorry Tom -- I have to lean on the side of Denise's version as well.  Sometimes a whisper is heard far more clearly than a shout.  I think both looked professional, but I agree with Kathy and the others that a modest, streamlined presentation works best, particularly with business buyers and boutique-type cards.  I hate to sound sexist here, but the statistics are that 80% of greeting card buyers are women ... and we gals tend to be drawn to unobrtrusive marketing lures rather than bright and shiny bait.  Despite that it's yet another thing to clutter up the back of the card, I think the new forestry council logo might actually help improve sales -- let's hope so!

Keep up the good work all ... it's amazing to see how much gets accomplished in a relatively short time!  Kudos to all who participate!    Smiley

Hmmm, I kind of like bright and shiny bait! Especially if it's the "wearable" kind!   Smiley  Just ask my husband!   Wink

Are we not still bound by obligations to the printers to have some info in a couple of the corners? I thought that that stipulation was mentioned as unavoidable several pages back - so that would mean that not everything can be placed in the centre...

Thanks to everyone for their feedback.  I think we have provided GCU enough design ideas and opinions for them to modify this surface when and if they decide to do so.  Whatever they do it will likely be superior to all the commercial ones I posted on page 5.

Here are some consensus aspects:
1.  Smaller and centered GCU logo
2.  Smaller and centered FSC tag (please look into using the "minimal" versions available)
3.  Smaller and centered Artist credits underneath the GCU logo and with a stylish matching font
4.  Retain the option for artists to include a photo or store logo with their BOC credits as we do now

Yes/No decisions:
1.  Color or B/W GCU and FCS logos
2.  Copyright contact block for BigDates, and where to place it (use an overall stylish matching font)
4.  Card number and where to place it (use an overall stylish matching font)
5.  Allow an optional "About" line in the Artists Credits (use an overall stylish matching font)

This is what Nasser said earlier about safe parameters for BOC credits:

This is pretty amazing and so powerful, it makes me proud that we have a community that works together so well and can hash out great ideas Smiley     Downside is it may be difficult to make everyone happy as the opinions and tastes vary, and there may not be a "perfect solution".

Here are some parameters to keep in mind for the back of the card. The right top and right bottom corners are used by our printing partner and are mandatory.  This makes the middle top or middle bottom spoken for as well since we can't risk things flowing into the restricted areas.  So this leaves the top left, bottom left and the center middle available to us.

My personal thoughts are as follows.  We never received any complaints regarding the back of the card before introducing the "free card" promotion.  A simple solution is to leave that area, top left, blank again and be done with it.  However, we thought that it was a big plus to convey that we're doing our share to help with the environment.  Chances that the FSC message is going to be received in a negative regard are slim.

As for the appearance, we have seen a multitude of different card backings.  As Tom exhibits, they range from simple to busy.  We prefer to keep the artist information the same since it gets the message across that these are everyday artists and we're doing something different than what the traditional card makers have done in the past.  Agreed that some of the artist images need to be more professional.  Currently those images do not go through a review process.  It is left to each artist to use good taste and discretion.  That image is your calling card so to speak so it is in your best interest to have an appealing profile image.  All artists do have the option of suppressing the image from the BOC.

I'm suggesting that we leave the boc "as is" for a few weeks to see if we get any positive/negative feedback.  It will also give most of you a chance to look at a real sample.   We can then revisit if the FSC logo should be smaller, different color or totally removed.  Since we are not directly the FSC approved party we do have to operate within certain limits in regard to their seal usage.

Thanks,
Nasser
