Today or tomorrow I should receive cards with the promo on the back and will be better able to speak to the issues.  However, never being at a lack of opinion.....I would caution about sending a coupon, off hand I think that is tacky.  Personally I would welcome a small, elegant, notice on the card back stating "go to Whatever.com" to order a free card.  I don't think this would be tacky if done right.  I also celebrate the new sales that this promo will harvest.  I applaud the way that GCU is constantly seeking marketing ideas.  You guys are the cat's meow...

while i am for promotion and have stated so on the board previously, i wasn't sure i liked the idea of a promo on the back of the card.  to me it seemed as others have said to possibly cheapen the look of the cards.

while i know a  small code might be missed I would like to see something subtle.  i too would have liked to have seen what was going to be put on the card beforehand.

as for the current logo.  it is nice but a little large to me.

Re: Promo Question

I am wondering how this works for those us who purchase cards to re-sell them.

If I place these cards with promo in a local shop and a buyer purchases one, the buyer sees the promo on the back, comes to the site and uses the code to send a free card. Then, that person who bought the card in the shop sends it out to the person he/she bought it for. The person receives the card, then notices the promo and comes to the online shop and tries to use the code for a free card.

Will the promo work for the receipient, as well as for the buyer, as long as they are first time users? If not, the potential to annoy people with this promo exists.

If so, has GCU allowed for the potential to have two purchases per card in the costs associated with the promo?

What if people browsing cards in the shop see the code and write it down and use it without purchasing a card? There is the potential for abuse in the case of cards purchased for reselling.

Maybe it would be worth discussing an option for those purchasing their cards for retail shops to remove the promo code?

Another thought for those offering a free card for promotions - maybe create a feature called "free card of the week" - if you purchase any card on the site you also get the free card of the week for that week (only one free card allowed per purchaser per week, regardless of how many cards they buy in that particular week). Or it could be set up so that only a person buying a card from the featured shop (ie: the seller who is offering that week's free card) gets the free card.

The free card of the week features one card from one artist, but their shop is also featured for the week.

I would be happy to donate a free card if something along this line was set up.

Based on artist and shopper feedback we have resized the promotion on the back of the card and moved it to a more subtle location, in the upper left hand corner.  This should start appearing on cards being printed this evening.

Thanks for your input!

The promotion code itself is identical on all cards.  When redeemed there is logic that checks to see if the shopper is new to our site only allowing the same shopper to use it one time.  So in your example assuming both the sender and the receiver were new shoppers to GCU they would both be able to use the code.

Keeping things simple, we do not have plans for an option to print w/o this promotion.

Thanks also for your free card of the week idea, we'll put it in the hopper  Smiley

Greetings,

Last week we started a new promotion that appears on the back of all cards.  It offers the recipient of the card a promo code for a free greeting card.   This will hopefully entice new users to try our service.

GCU is bearing the expense for this promo, so Artists will receive their full commission on these free cards.  BTW, the offer is good for new users only and does not include any of the shipping charges.

We hope this new offer will invite more people to visit and purchase from GCU.

Nasser

That's a great idea!  Smiley

I just received some cards, and the resized and repositioned promo code is much better!!  As I give out samples, I will point out the freebie code and hopefully it will be effective.  Have you been able to measure the effectiveness as yet?

Thanks for listening to us!

We've only had a handful new shoppers generated from the new back-of-the-card promo.   We have already had a few complaints from shoppers.    One in particular wanted a refund for her 30 invitation card order, as she didn't feel comfortable sending them to her bridal party.

Have you (artists) received any feedback on the back-of-card promo?

Thanks,
Nasser

Nasser,
I have had 3 positive comments from customers.  These have been comments since the new and improved smaller promo.  All three comments were positive.  I have heard nothing negative at all from my end.

Only from the shop where I've taken my cards to be sold - like me, they think the card back is too cluttered.

The problem with the person you mention could be due to the fact that when you view the "back" of the card large size, you don't see all of those extra things (the promo, the additional number in the upper and lower right corners doesn't show either).

This is what you see:

It's a little misleading to customers if that's what they see, but not what they get.

Hi GCU,
I just received the Valentine cards I ordered and as usual they are all very lovely.  This is the first time I have seen the promo on the back, as I ordered my Christmas cards prior to the promo code appearing on the back.  I hate to say this, but I really did not like it.  I think many customers buy our cards because they are beautiful works of art and I think the code takes something away from that.  Don't want to sound negative, but if the code has not generated many sales, maybe it would be better to have the promo code on the home page.  A new shopper stopping by might be inclined to give GCU a try for a free card. Or maybe do something like new shoppers only, buy one get one free -- good for only one free card though.
I know ya'll work really hard and I appreciate all you do to help us all make more sales,.
Thanks for listening.
Kathy

GCU was working on having the Artist Credits Corner be a wide graphics block.  In this case, we could put the FREE CARD offer there.  I like this approach a bit better since the card sale might be in my shop where otherwise they may not visit my shop at all.

Hi Tom,
That is an interesting change you are talking about...I think it would be an improvement, but again I just don't like the idea and here is why... What if a bride had purchased 200 wedding invitations or a business 200 apologies, etc.?  We are looking at it from a perspective of we need more customers and want more sales, but I think customers might not like this if they are buying in bulk or for a very special occasion like weddings or for business use.  A business who wants to apologize for example to a customer wouldn't want the customer to think they got the card for free!  I just don't feel like a promo directly on the product is the right way to go.  Again, I don't want to sound negative, but I am afraid this might actually discourage existing customers.
