Photography or Illustration; Which is best?
Nov 27th, 2008, 10:36am

Do you people with the four or five star retings seem to sell more Illustration or Photographic type cards?

I notice most of you who are experiencing sales have great potfolios and seem to show mostly Illustration/Art work.

Your advice here is appreciated.  I'm thinking about giving up the photographic approach and tackling the simple art approach as I am limited in that regard.  I don't think I could be as good as most of you with my art work, but if I keep it simple, may be I'll start to sell something.

The stars have noting to do with sales success. They show how many posts the person has made to the forum....As for photos vs illustration...I have no idea which is more successful. Good question though.

Cheryl - I suppose I could start things off by providing my wee little stats.

One card purchased from a Google search was a photograph redone to look like art via Photoshop CS.

THe two cards my wife bought were grafic/art work.

Not much to go on, but enough to arouse my suspicions since my photographic cards over 200 views and clicks in the last two months, but none have sold except for the one mentioned above.

I think it really depends on where your talent lies... Out of over 900 cards sold, less than 30 have been my watercolors or what I created on Print shop... however, my sister is by far a better photographer than I am an artist! I think you really have to experiment to see wgat works best for you. On the other hand, I love to paint, so I'll keep trying!

I find that I sell more illustration (digital art), but I also have far more illustrations than photography...so my statement really isn't true.  I know that when I buy cards, or used to, I tend toward illustration rather than photography.  Perhaps it is just a personal preference.

I think it is rather difficult to judge what will sell and what won't.  I have cards that sell just before I am ready to delete them because I am not that fond of them, and wham...a sale will come thru for that card.

I do know that for me, since I have more cards up that span a wide range of categories, my sales have increased.  Also, my cards that are specific to a category, ie, 7th birthday as opposed to just a birthday card, sells better.  Also cards targeted to a particular family relation (aunt, uncle, Indian Chief), does better as well.

Finally, I can not emphasis enough how important it is to have QUALITY images as well as QUANTITY.  This has been my experience thus far.

Thanks to all you folks for your responses!  I used to make a living out of Analysis work, but always had a Photography business of some kind on the side.

After reading your responses, I have to agree that Quality and Quantity work very well together.  It is also obvious to me that we must work within our personal gifts and talents.  That aside we can view this from the buyers side.

Folks who can do both Photography and Art/Graphics well have a great advantage and position.  It is difficult to admit that we are mediocre at anything; however it is also beneficial to eliminate all mediocre work from your potfolio.  Given that a contributor does that and there is a fairly equal amount of Art and Photogra[hy remaining, the buyer will probably go for a clean, crisp graphic over a photograph.

When I used to exhibit in Fine art and Photographic shows (In the days of Film) the consumers tended to purchase the Watercolor over Photography.  The reason being that the consumers would often coment "I can do that" or "I have a picture that I took like that" as they reviewed some of the photographers' work.  In my case, a woman really liked the 20"X24" shot of a Siberian Tiger I had matted and framed, but her husband pulled her ito the artist's space next to mine.  He bought a Water Color of somes geese - very nice painting.  At the time I was in one of the top shows in the country - Wings and Water Show.  Drawing that experience to mind causes me to wondeer if building up my portfolio with an equal amount of graphic work will help to generate some sales.

Angela seems to have a nice mix going, and Linda is doing well with graphics.  Linda your comment did have a good point.  The point is - someone with mostly graphics could very well do better than someone with mostly photography.  But it definitely has to be of a fine quality.

Christine - thanks for your encouragement!  I'll keep plugging.

Honestly I don't think it matters either way, a beautiful image is a beautiful image wheter it's photography or illustration. Im sure that there are a lot of artists here that only do photography and sell lots of cards.  Cheesy

I don't know about the question, as i have mostly photos on my card site, but I do know that my ones with longer verses or poetry inside sell far better. Smiley

Hi Harry,

I do both illustrations and photography -- much more comfortable with vector illustrations than I am with DoF though!  Very interesting question you raised -- very good points brought up by all.

I think Raina nailed it ... the cover image -- be it a photo or an illustration -- has to do 2 things.  1)  connect to the occasion somehow, even if it's in an abstract way, and 2) connect to an emotion that will be felt by both the sender and the recipient.  If you can make those two connections with any image, it will sell.  Also think Tracy is right about cards with verses inside.  It's been said many times on these boards -- maybe not this bluntly -- the cover art grabs them by the heart ... the inside message carries them to the checkout.

Harry, I left you a few comments ... you're off to a great start!  BTW ... are you RoadRunner from 123rf and SS ???  I hope you are 'cause I think I recognize some of your photos, lol!  Always nice to see another microstocker crossing the border into POD-land!  Wishing you all the best of success and many sales!   Smiley

Teri Francis,
I just read your response and you certainly nailed it on the head as I think of my own card-buying.   The cover image does have to pull me in -- and it can be through beauty, humor, or anything that tugs at something inside of me.    Then, it is usually, but not always, up to the words inside to seal the deal.
