Thanks for the tip Diana. If I am feeling better on monday I just might go, right now I have the flu and lost my voice and I am going on a small vacation the day after memorial day so I don't want to push myself. On a good note I usually GET sick on vacation  lips sealed this time I got a head start.

Nicole: Hope you're feeling better in time to enjoy your vacation!

BTW - Anyone attending the Nat Stat Show/Surtex: I've found that people were most chatty & friendly in the mornings when things were slow. So if you're walking the show mornings are best. Good luck & have fun to all that are going. Wish I could be there with you - maybe next year.   -Di

Good tips about attending the show. When I wanted to attend last year, I had the same concerns Nicole had about the proper business credentials. When I contacted the NSS show organizers, they said that I couldn't pre-register as an artist, but could just show them my portfolio at the show and then pay $35 (I think) to attend. I really preferred preregistering, so I pre-registered online for the Surtex show and that $35 fee gets you into both shows. They are just held on different floors at the same convention center.

The Surtex show is very worthwhile if you think you might license your art for gift wrap and other paper products, like cards. I spent more time at the NSS, but both are worthwhile.

Good luck all - enjoy Smiley

Hi Mindy
I won't be there, but just wanted to say hi and I am so thrilled to have had a friend direct me to your site! I love how you give us so much information to create and promote our cards. I am so excited to get started!
I put a few cards up but I plan to spend more time researching your stats and create more of what people are looking for.
Thank you,
Linda

Hello all!
Fresh back from walking the show floor and have lots to share.  First, what a wonderful city!  NYC truly is the city that never sleeps.  I am a die hard born and raised Californian and must say I'll return to NY in a heartbeat.

It did rain on and off which slowed me down a bit and forced me to buy not one but two umbrellas over the period of 4 days.

Ok, about the show...it was tremendous.  A great showing of all things stationery and beyond representing both big and small exhibitors.  Estimate 1,300 exhibitors and 15,000 buyer attendees.  My best guess is approx 20% were greeting card exhibitors.

Impressive booths.  It was quite clear that decking out your booth is a must (which can get expense of course).  Many booths were "homey" literally - walls, windows, couches, bookshelves.  One booth actually had a mini waterfall and real flower window boxes.

The top 10 show trends:
1. Rock Products - rock n roll imagery especially guitars
2. Bolder Folders - stylish folders in fashion colors and fun wording
3. Talk Bubbles - popular design element used for fun and clever designs
4. Colorful Novelties - bright hues & whimsical designs for funky yet functional novelty products
5. Fab Tags - decorative tags to help personalize items from gift bags to luggage
6. Wood Works - textures showing up in greeting cards and journals
7. Match Makers - personalized matchbooks w/ illustrations or quotes selling well
8. Branch Designs - sprigs, delicate limbs & tree designs, nature inspired
9. Dragonfly Designs - design elements
10. Owls Everywhere - owl and bird design elements

Going green of course continues to be a growing trend.  I spoke with many artists that were using soy based inks, post consumer fiber papers, and eco friendly printers (one even 100% wind powered).

The 20th annual Louie Awards finalists were on display and winners announced.  Many were embellished cards; popouts, 3d elements, glitter, etc. and die cut shapes.  There were several funny animal photos with clever verses.
See article on winners: http://www.giftsanddec.com/article/CA6562412.html?industryid=47337

A notable quote:
Fern Gimbelman, Co-President and Art Director, Designer Greetings, Inc. and chair of this year’s International Greeting Card Awards.  “The LOUIEs recognize excellence by honoring imagery that captures our eyes and words that speak to our hearts.  It's about creating products that are meaningful and offer a way for people to bond with one another."

Another show tip which our GCU community is way ahead of is focusing on the "lesser occasions" to bring in new greeting card buyers.  For example, New Year's, Chinese New Year, Admin Professionals Day, Nurses' Day, Bosses Day, etc.

Some interesting Bridal Trends for wedding related stationery:
1. Feminine Chic - bridal shower invitations are going all out girly, with motifs like high heels, a gown or fashionista holding a stack of gifts.
2. Getting Specific - cards to ask friends to be in their wedding party (GCU is all over this)
3. Natural Selections - focused on the great outdoors, tree branches, birds, shells & coral are popular design elements
4. Color Code - color is hot as ever but many are opting for stark schemes of black and white.  The color combo comes up in swirly art-nouveau-like designs, damask and stripes.

Overall, lots of humorous and clever greeting cards.  The best eye catching lines and booths were those that had a clear identity and style.

We would consider exhibiting next year with a cooperative group of participating artist.

I hope my trip summary helps sum up the event for you!

Thanks so for the update!  It's always such a treat to view the "Louies" isn't it? . . and in reference to your line quoted above (and in the words of Meridith from Grays' Anatomy),  Wink "Pick me! Pick me!"  Grin

Isn't NYC a great place to visit? . . .I look forward to my trip this summer.

Mindy!
I'm getting all pumped up just thinking about 'Next Year'...
I am eager to hear your and other artist's suggestions as to what we might do collectively.  I plan to be there--God willing and the creek don't rise...
You did a wonderful job of reporting back to us what you saw for Greeting Card trends.  Gives us a good launching pad for our artistic endeavors both in the pictoral images and the verbal images.  Speaking of this, reminds me...what did you see in the way of 'Blank' cards?
Thanks so much for sharing with us.

Hi Sue,
Some of the exhibitors did offer their cards in both greeted and blank.  I will say those booths that displayed cards with general front images and did not offer any inner text nor occasion specific greetings had very little traffic.

All please join me in welcoming our first new artist from the show.  Mary Kay specializes in Sign Language cards.  Take a peek at her store:

"WOW!"  --thump on the head--  "I coulda had a V-8!"
Why didn't I think of that???  My daughters and a granddaughter all speak sign language.  What a wonderful thing to do Mary Kay!  I am sure there is a huge community out there who have never been catered too before.  They will LOVE your cards!  And then those who are not speach and hearing impaired but do use the sign language (like my children) will even love it....and all those who work in related fields...Oh gosh, I just think this is the best idea yet!  Congratulations on a worthy venture!  And I'm so glad you decided to do it here with us on GCU.
WELCOME!
Sue
PS  I will leave the 'make-up' card jokes for Tom, Mary Kay.  I'm sure you'll meet him soon.

Mindy,
My mind keeps wandering back to the New York show.  Could you give us more on this?  What kind of booth would GCU put up and how?  Would some of the artists need to be there physically ahead of time and how many and how much?  Exactly what will the format be? Will GCU have actual sized cards?  I'm sure there has to be something larger to catch people's eye.  A monitor?  Would GCU have different catagories?  (ie:Wedding, Birthday, ADOPTION TRIAD.... Roll Eyes)  Will you have specific artists cover specific catagories?  I would assume a decision is needed  sometime well ahead of the show as to who is going and who is not?  I would assume GCU will make the ultimate decision as to who CAN participate out of those willing and available to participate?
Thanks for your feedback, Mindy.
Sue
