GOOGLE Search and Shopping observation
Feb 28th, 2008, 12:26pm

I made a sale today, finally, and the email said it came via a Google search for "divorce cards."  GREAT!

Sure enough, I try it myself and a link to BigDates was on the bottom of the second search page.  The link was to the BigDates ecard page for Divorce, with 9 cards showing.  I then expected a smartly placed "See Paper Divorce Cards" link on that ecard page, as there was no evidence the shopper got there wanting an ecard specifically.

Of course, there is no such link, but there is a BigDates tab to Paper Cards.  I first didn't see this tab but thought, "Oh - that will have the list of Paper Divorce cards."  Wrong, just the list of ALL Paper cards.  The shopper then has to drill down to find Divorce cards, not knowing where it might be categorized.  It even took me a while.

If it's possible to align or clearly cross-link the ecard pages to the paper card page equivalent, that would be ideal, seeing how GOOGLE SEARCH has links that plot people in the middle of websites, and even directly into stores!  We can't depend on a top-down site design anymore.  This suggestion applies to GCU ecard pages too.

I just thought I'd mention this, though I'd guess it's already known and already on "the list."

This post isn't a complaint, just an observation.  The fact that someone found us, and did some shopping, is a testament to the work that has been done to date, so thank you GCU!

Congratulations on your first sale, Tom! May it be the first of many more.

I did the google search for divorce cards and it is VERY confusing. I'm amazed someone found your card at all!

Hi Tom,

First off, congrats on the sale!

I went to Google and did the same search and you're right, it's not too clear how to get to the paper card category for divorce cards.  Great observation.

I'll see if it's easy for us to add a "See Paper Cards" link (or something along those lines that includes the search term) to our Ecard pages.

What are your thoughts on actually adding a row of paper cards to that page, along with a "See More Paper Cards" link?

Shaun -

Thanks for making the effort to retrace these shopper's search steps.  It's eye-opening, but we all understand how complicated it can be to implement good clean improvements.  Clearly the ecard pages score highest in search, so that likly is the widest doors people come into big-dates and GCU from, so it's key to get them over to the paying side if that is what they came shopping for.  Ideally, put a nice big button/link to the paper cards right where it can't be missed and will likely be clicked..

Having some paper cards on the ecard pages sure would show the contrast of quality, so that is a slick idea.  I'd also suggest they see the "Just $2.49+stamp, and we mail it," phraseon the ecard page, which is a good offering compared to other sites.

Thanks again, and keep up the good work!

SmileyCongrats Tom on your first (of many, I'm sure) sale. I know from reading your post your very addamant about not considering yourself an artist. I would just like to say, being able to draw a cartoon figure or a Mona Lisa painting isn't all that an artist is. Writing is certainly an Art, creating a Card with Old Photos and catchy captions is an Art.. Creating Anything out of Nothing is an art and can only be done by an ARTIST...Like yourself...Way to go Tom...capt.
