New Card Positioning
Feb 23rd, 2008, 2:47am

I've been busy tweaking my store front to efficiently utilize the available space, and putting my best cards in the right order on page one.  I've fully utilized the feature section, putting my best 9 cards there and in order of perceived popularity.

I've also placed the first 15 cards of my gallery as my next 15 "best" cards. and pushed all the ones from the features section to the very end of the gallery since shoppers already have seen these.

I did notice today though that newly approved cards end up at the top of the gallery pushing all other cards down.  This surprised me a bit as I expected new cards to show up on the other end, which is where I would prefer them to show up, and then, when I have time, I can position them in the spot that best fits.

Another preference would be to only have the featured cards on page 1 and as the shopper (who has already seen the featured cards) moves to page 2 and beyond, they see a full page (9+15 = 24) of gallery cards.

Don't get me wrong, things are OK as is, but I thought some here might have some views on this, or some tips on how they do it.

Cheers ....TOM

Tom,
I too would like to hear how others feel about these issues.
I also have thought that it might be better if our featured cards did not show up at the top of every page.  I've wondered if a shopper might click to page two and see the same cards again, and quit browsing--thinking they have seen ALL my cards and are being put into a loop.
As far as putting the new cards at the top...Well, I rather think that is good.  First it allows the return visitor to see you have new cards.  Secondly, it keeps us on our toes and necessitates our maintaining our store with regularity.  The only thing I can think might be better is if the cards were placed, automatically, in their appropriate groups--ie:  Birthday, Holiday, Get Well, Thinking of you, Sympathy, etc.
Just my thoughts....Anyone else?

That's why I don't use the feature cards section on my store, because it shows up on subsequent pages. Someone not too long ago pointed out that featured cards also show up above search results when a visitor does a search from your store. It seems that a visitor could easily be confused by all this.

As far as the new cards showing up at the top of the page, I like that. Especially if I'm doing holiday-specific cards. In the middle of Christmas card shopping season, if I didn't have time to go in and manage my cards' position, at least I knew that the visitors would see my newest offerings for the current season.

Yikes - good point about the search box.  I tried it and that is the way it works, and the clickable keyword list acts the same way (Featured cards still show), however just clicking on a category shows just those cards in that category.

The reason I (currently) like both featured and gallery is it keeps my best set of 9 in place, - selected by me from the "HOTTEST" categories, plus you get a full 24 cards in the store window (9+15) rather than just 15 with just the gallery.    This allows a longer length "front window" allowing a longer side column to exploit.

Sue - good point on us managing the store no matter where the most recent approved cards show up.  I guess since I am in creation mode and a few trickle in APPROVED each day, and I know these are not my best stuff, I tend to want to move them farther back in the store as soon as possible.  Not a big deal though.  Thanks for the reply.

I believe one of the items on GCU's wish list is better storefront management. As the company continues to grow, we'll see more site improvements, I'm sure.
