Among the most anticipated holidays of the year would be Thanksgiving. And why would it not be anticipated? This is a holiday known for its amazing feast with family, friends, and loved ones. That is certainly worth looking forward to. And, of course, this is a holiday known for giving thanks to God for all the good things that have happened during the year.
For many, there is much to give thanks to and something as quick as sending a loved on a Thanksgiving card can turn this Thanksgiving into one to remember. While most people do have a common idea of the origins of Thanksgiving, they might not have a total idea of the true origins. It is accurate that the Thanksgiving holiday was popular in the 1600's among the pilgrims but the very first instance of a feast of Thanksgiving was in the late 1500's and it was Spanish settlers who originated the tradition. In time, the tradition did catch on with the other settlers with the most famous feast beginning in 1621 in Plymouth. This was a religious feast intended to give thanks to God and it became a yearly tradition starting in the 1660's which continues to this very day. While the sending of Thanksgiving cards & wishes is a new tradition,
we hope that it will soon become as natural as turkey and mashed potatoes!
Thanksgiving did not become a holiday with a fixed date until Abraham Lincoln selected one in 1863. The date was moved to the fourth Thursday in November by Franklin Roosevelt in the 1940's.Thanksgiving greeting cards almost universally present imagery from the early days of Thanksgiving as the pilgrims and the Native Americans that celebrated the first Thanksgiving have become iconic and mythic figures.
