The arrival of Grandparent's Day was long overdue. Grandma and Grandpop certainly play a vital role in the life of a young child. This is why they are so deserved of being honored with their own special day. Of course, no one is suggested that Grandma and Grandpop have been outright ignored. It was common tradition to send them a card and a nice note on Father's Day and Mother's Day which is still common practice. You also have the option of sending them an additional card during the year...on Grandparent's Day.

Some might assume this is a new holiday. It is not. Grandparent's Day was first officially acknowledged in 1978 and is still celebrated to this very day. Marian McQuade of West Virginia felt that the contributions of seniors to their community were greatly overlooked. She felt that it was the duty of young ones to honor their elders by "adopting" them. You could say her vision was to create a variant on the Big Brother, Big Sister program. The obvious difference would be it would be the seniors who would be looked after and given support by young ones.

An offshoot of McQuade's work was a movement for a national Grandparent's Day. This started in the early 1970's and quietly became a recognized holiday in 1978 when it was signed into law by President Jimmy Carter. While not as well known as Mother's Day and Father's Day, Grandparent's Day remains a wonderful holiday to celebrate. If you have a senior in your family you wish to honor, why not send that person a nice greeting card? There are a great many different Grandparent's Day cards available including traditional cards as well as those for foster grandparents, first grandparents, and even grandparents to be. Best of all the artistry that goes into the crafting of the cards will certainly make the cards quite memorable and appreciated.
