Crackers!
Sep 28th, 2013, 12:59am

I have had an idea for a card, but I am not sure if it will work. Can anybody tell me if you have Christmas crackers in the US?

We've had Christmas crackers, but I suspect  they're not common in the US.

Thanks for the replies. One more of the differences between cultures!

Nan, yes, they usually have a small snap thing that makes a noise when you pull them, and contain a joke, a paper hat, and a small toy or gift.
On Christmas day, we decorate the dining table with them.

Crackers! As a Brit, I can tell you that they are not common here.
They are available only in a few stores but they tend to be expensive and are not widely known or used in the US.
So not too many over here would recognize them or know the name except us ex-pats.
Cheryl, I have never heard of Bon-Bon over here or in England. undecided

The Christmases we had crackers, we bought them through a catalog; and I notice that they're easy enough to find online.  So there would be folks who would recognize them on a card here in the US, but I don't know how high a percentage of GCU shoppers would know them.

Now you have me thinking that we just might have to revive that tradition!

Crackers were one of the Christmas traditions I introduced to my in-laws many years ago. None of my family or our friends had ever heard of them. I found them in a local specialty stationery store at that time, it was in the days before buying everything online. Grin I'm thinking the same as Christi, time to revive that tradition!

I would say forge ahead anyway, as GCU doesn't only sell to the US market and the Americans LOVE anything typically British. Smiley

Cheryl, glad to hear the Aussies support this tradition I almost headed for Australia back in the day but opportunities opened up in America first, so I headed west. Grin

I concur with everyone. Crackers are not well known by the majority of the population but each year I see more of them in the stores. I think it will catch on. Right now, many folks don't know what to "do" with them  as the packaging doesn't usually explain.

However, there are certainly folks who have Aussie, Canadian, and UK friends who do know about the tradition and I'm sure your card would be appealing as something special. Go for it!

Norma,

Christmas crackers were introduced to my family here in Idaho by a very dear English friend in the early 70s and quickly became a delightful family tradition.  I used to have to special order them but now they are available in most every store in my area, even grocery stores.

Go girl!  I think it's a great idea for a card.  Be sure to share when it's complete.  It will be fun to see your creation.
