Sometimes it's easy and I know exactly what I want to say, other times I just get stuck.  undecided  Maybe some new eyes can help me with a few of these images.

This one is meant for someone with cancer:
http://artist.greetingcarduniverse.com/-Hope+for+someone+with+cancer+-+water+lil y,+leaves,+buds-greeting+card-673130?pid=673130&aid=142919&f=1&ref=cb_card_title

A caption for this one could be Best Buds, but what to say inside?
http://i56.tinypic.com/rvhvtv.jpg

The posture of these two and the way they're looking at each other makes this one so charming:
http://i52.tinypic.com/e7jlvq.jpg

This baby is looking right at the camera but isn't smiling. If I could get some category suggestions on this one, I think I could write a relevant verse:
http://i56.tinypic.com/qycodj.jpg

Please, have a stab at any one of these... any suggestions are welcome!   Smiley

OMG, Rebecca - what a long post! Those are all wonderful ideas.

Those are terrific suggestions re: categories - especially the Congrats. I thought this image was too somber for any of the baby categories, tho, because the baby isn't smiling. Do you think someone would buy a card featuring a sad (she looks sad to me) baby? I know a minute later she broke out in laughter, but at this second in time.... does she look sad to you? Anyone reading this, please feel free to comment.

The border on the water lily card I'm hoping will be trimmed off during the printing process. I'm getting ready to order some of my cards for the first time, so I'll find out. No one has purchased it so far. But your point about the border is a good one, because the buyer doesn't know the border will be cut, and they may be turned off by the color.

You are so sweet to take all that time to answer my post!  kiss  Thank you so much.  Smiley

What a good idea!

I know I could use a little (or a lot!) help in this area because English is a foreign language for me.

I'm well aware that a beautiful and well-selling greeting card required a great quality front picture and a great quality inner verse.

Would anyone be willing to help me - for example with some inner verses for one or two of my Easter cards http://www.greetingcarduniverse.com/community/store.asp?store_id=2271&CGID=5 &num=
or for one or two of my Valentine's Day cards http://www.greetingcarduniverse.com/community/store.asp?store_id=2271&CGID=3 &num= . Or with suitable inner verses for card of your choice.

I would be very grateful for any advice, suggestion or idea!
For the verses and also for any critical comments on the front of my cards. What to change or how to improve my cards to make more sales?

I would be very happy to return the favor - perhaps with some advices on designs for your greeting cards or even with one or two of my selected patterns for greeting card if you want to.

Thanks in advance for your time and knowledge!

Hi Evelyn Smiley

I see you are getting some great suggestions for your cards Smiley
One thing struck me on reading your comment about the border on the water lily. In regard to the border being cut off, some of the border may be lost in the print/trim process but it is not necessarily an even cut off all around. For example, you may lose almost all the border on one side and none on the other. I now try to avoid borders for this reason. You might be better off getting rid of the border completely or making a soft white 'dreamlike' border around that is not completely even and would not be so obvious if one side was trimmed more than the other.
Hope all that made sense  Wink

I took another look at your baby girl photo and I do not think that she looks sad at all. She is just beautiful. She does look like she is studying someone or something though, trying to figure it out. I think this card would be great for anything baby girl.

As far as the border around the cancer card, you could crop it to remove it. If you would like me to play with it and send you some ideas that you might could use, I could do that if you email me the photo as an attachment. When I am done with the ideas, I could send them back to you as attachments as well. Just send me a personal message and I will send you back my email address so that you can do so. You don't have to use any of my photo ideas, I just enjoy trying to help.  Smiley

On your Easter cards, I think since they are so colorful, the blanks should read - (Inside) Hope you have a very colorful Easter.

On your Valentine's Day cards, I think those that say, "Be My Valentine" on the front, should read - (Inside) Happy Valentine's Day!

On this one, http://www.greetingcarduniverse.com/shopping/zoom.asp?pid=340274&w=1&ref =cb_large_view I think it should read - (Inside) You are thought of today, and always.

On this one, http://www.greetingcarduniverse.com/shopping/zoom.asp?pid=464041&w=1&ref =cb_large_view I think it should read - (Inside) Just thought I would drop you a few lines to let you know that you are thought of on this special day.

On this one, http://www.greetingcarduniverse.com/shopping/zoom.asp?pid=464039&w=1&ref =cb_large_view I think it should read - (Inside) Hope your life is filled with happiness, on this very special day.

Please do not feel like you owe me or anyone else anything. This is just advice and you do not have to take it. You are the one doing all the work. Good luck with your store!  Smiley

Hi Pamela, You know, I had heard that about the uneven cutting but I had forgotten about it. I'm so glad you reminded me. That would look horrible if it happened with this design. I will definitely change it. Thank you so much!

Hi Robin,

I read on the forum here that blank cards do not sell as well as cards with verse. BUT, you have such talent and style, it probably won't make a difference in your case.  Wink

Robin,

I just did a Google search for "fairy verses" and found this great site:

http://www.love-of-poems.com/fairy-poems-verses-quotes.html

If you like any and plan to use them, it's best to stick with the "author unknown" verses, or those that were penned before 1920, so you don't have to worry about copyrights.

Hi Robin,
At first glance two possibles come to mind.
First Birth announcements...On the front "It's a Girl"  Inside..."Announcing the birth of our daughter....etc
Cat=Announcements>Birth/New Baby>Girl

Second "Congratulations on the birth of your daughter"  Inside "May all her dreams come true"
Cat=Congratulations>New Baby>Girl

Also as I mentioned to Evelyn be careful of border, whilst some may be trimmed off during printing it is not always an even cut off all around.

Also it may work as "Happy Birthday"  Inside "May all your Dreams come true"
Cat=Birthday>Mixed Media/Collage and Birthday>For Kids>For Girls.

Don't know if any of that helps. It is a beautiful card

Hi Robin...me again Smiley

Just a thought.... your cards also fit well in Collections>Mystical and Myths> Fairies-or-Mermaids so when you select a category eg Happy Birthday also choose this category. The reviewers will have the final say on  if they can or cannot go there, as well as the other, but I think it seems reasonable and worth a try. If you have not got them in there already...I didn't check Cheesy

As far as your latest.
How about Happy Earth Day.......Celebrate the wonders of Mother Earth
Holidays>Earth Day>General
With perhaps an version for birthday on Earth Day.

also Occasions>Seasons>Spring.
Spring is here.............Time for all Mother Nature's creatures to awaken.

This link is very helpful when choosing categories since you get to see the main categories at a glance, there is a more detailed one but it is so big I find it more difficult. I use this one and just drill down until I reach the final sub-cat that works.
http://artist.greetingcarduniverse.com/community/default.asp?cid=11

Well better go finish some other things here now  Winkbut this sure was fun. Hope I haven't been too annoying.

Hi Rebecca!

Thank you very much for taking your time to look at my cards and giving your suggestions. I'll be happy to use them! Thank you again for your help!

I've visited your store "Grant Greetings" and I looked at your beautiful card collecton. I also read that you are a poet like my sister Maja. Both are skillful with words!

Best of luck in creating cards and poems!

I know this doesn't relate to the original post, but several have mentioned the uneven cut-off with borders.  I used to have this problem a couple of years ago, but everything i have ordered and received since has had "right on" cropping and a lot of my cards have borders. . . . a little (microscopic) does go over to the the back, but for the the most part, they've been centered.  I do move my image over "2 clicks" to the right when I'm z"finally" done and always allow 3/8 border.  It's worked pretty well so far . . . but with the inconsistencies with the printer, you just never know . . .I've been pretty lucky I guess.  But I do order a few of my cards every now and the, especially when I hear of possible printer problems, just to check.  As a graphic artist I am very concerned with end product. . . . you do have to just keep checking and bring up the problems when they are noticed.

That is great to know.   I have talked with some artists here who are very worried about the cropping of their cards. Too scared to even use borders in fact. I am sure you have eased many minds. Thanks!

Peggy,
What a sweet image!  You might even try 'humanizing' it with something like, "Gloria in Excelsis Deo" (as if the dog is singing...)  and then add something like, "On Christmas Day, the Animals Sing."   Cheesy

If it was me, I would write a bubble quote on the front saying, "Fa... La... La... La... La..." like the dog is singing, and inside I would write something like, "Merry Christmas" or "Happy Holidays". If you don't know how to add the bubble on the front, just send it to me in an email as an attatchment and I can do it for you and send it back. Send me a private message and I can send you my email address if you want me to do this for you. If you can do it yourself, that would be great too. But, that is what I would do with this wonderful picture.

Thank you, All!

I've graduated to bubbles (but THANK YOU, for your offer - I love the spirit here!).  I agree .. this one really looks like he's singing ... still working on a caption.  Ideally I'd find a caption that would work with *anything* inside (for my SmugMug site too ...).  But for here, I can add my own insides.

This image  http://www.greetingcarduniverse.com/shopping/zoom.asp?pid=728253&w=1&ref =details_large_view  looked more like "dinner's on!" so I put what I did on the front.  Hope you like it!

You could create one of each. I think you are allowed to do three cards with the same image.

I would put on one, (Front) Happy 2nd Birthday!

On the other, (Front) You could leave it blank or add something like, I know what you're going through.

Your work is so great that it seems like a crime to place anything over the image at all.

Good luck, and let me know if I can help you in any way with anything else.  Smiley

Hi Gene,

I browsed your SmugMug gallery and as a photographer myself, you have some beautiful photographs.  If you wish to earn a bit of money on your cards, you are probably better off concentrating on uploading your images as cards just the way they are with simply words to add to the simple beauty your photos already offer.  A simple Birthday Wises on the front or inside, or With Sympathy is all many of your photos need.  There are many people who love the simplicity of a beautiful nature photograph on their card and GCU supports many categories for Blank Greeting Cards as well.

The choice is yours of course, but sharing .56-cents a card is not very exciting and I do think if you opened a store and kept your cards simple, they would do well with time.

Good luck to you;
Doreen

Gene, I agree with Doreen, you should start your own greeting card store. I took a look at your photos and you have some beautiful photos, too good to let someone else display them. You could do very well here. It is not that hard to create your own store and cards. The people here are so wonderful that they go way out to help with any issue that you may have learning your way around. If you are not good at writing, you can just leave your cards blank or ask for a writer's help. I am a writer and I would be more than happy to help you along the way, as would other writers here. You should really think about it before you go into something like this. If you and a writer did team up together, to split 56 cents when your card's sell isn't that much. Sometimes you have to take chances, Gene. You just might be amazed how well your work does. Please think about it.  Wink

Gene -

I concur with the other recent posters - while a search of the Forum here will leave you with the feeling that "blank inside" cards don't sell well, as another photographer I can tell you that they DO sell.  I do recommend getting creative and adding SOME text (best wishes, happy valentine's day, etc) but some images just stand on their own.  I'm a smugmugger too - welcome to GCU!

I noticed early on in my art career that I had this problem. Something about designing an image (painting, sculpting or graphic arts) and my writing skills quit on me. If I see someone else' image I am eloquent. One of my own, especially if I am working on it or just finished and I am struck dumb. Something about the different areas of the brain (I'm sure?)  Roll Eyes

I think we all go through a burnout stage every now and then. I was just writing a book review the other day and got all the way to the last paragraph when I couldn't think of anything to wrap it up. I tried for two hours. Finally, I just put it down. I plan to get back to it as soon as my thoughts come (soon I hope). It's really crazy because I went on to write a review on Amazon for that same book and had no trouble at all there. Maybe tomorrow?  undecided

so ... in the topic of collaboration - any ideas out there?

I LOVE the purple flower photo!  It's just beautiful.  All of them are special, but that one is extra special.
I think it would make a lovely encouragement card, something like,

"Just when our path seems darkest, we come upon a glimpse of what can be and find joy again."

Just a thought.  I made this up.....feel free to use it or not.
Keep up the gorgeous photography!!!

Hello Peggy,

I haven't been to Mission Trails in a long while, but yes the photo opportunities there are unlimited and know exactly what you mean by feeling the composition of the image and not knowing how to put it into words.   One suggestion and something I use,  carry a notebook with you when you are shooting and write down some of your thoughts, humorous bits of inspiration and 'what haves' as you are shooting or use your recorder on your cell phone.  It's amazing how much goes through your head while you are inspired out in the field, you think, "why, that was clever, I'll remember that when I get back to the computer at home."

Trust me, you won't remember diddly!

I write poetry usually which comes to me in song and much of that comes to me while driving or walking.  It's amazing sometimes how a song will just flow out like it had been written before, but ten minutes later, I can't recreate it.  While that tune or verse is going through my head, I have to record it right away or it's lost, not always forever, sometimes it will pop up again in a day or two or a month later, but never when I'm ready to do something about it a few hours later at the computer.  Even trying to write it down when I've finally pulled over or singing it out when I'm out of earshot of fellow pedestrians doesn't work as the creative flow is as fleeting as a gully washer in the desert.  I've found that the voice recorder on my cell phone is a great tool when I'm driving and when I'm walking downtown, running on a trail or just meandering in the park, I love my notebook as no one can accuse me of being crazy as they would if I started bellowing out that song in my head.  Most people that have heard my singing think I should sing 'tenor,' that is 'ten or' twenty miles away!  Shocked

I left you a couple of suggestions or ideas for verse on a couple of the images there at Smug Bug.  You're welcome to use them if they resonate with any resemblance to the image.

Best always, Randy
