Hi Mindy and everyone,

I think the decision to allow artists to be allowed to get commissions for selling their own cards is a good one.  I am not very business savvy, but this is my reasoning:

Artists get commissions for their design and art work, they use the services of GCU to print, host  and market their work.  Traditionally artists and designers are rubbish at marketing and selling, and promoters are not very good artists and designers.  So each gets paid an amount for their specialist contribution.  That's the genius of the GCU site.

If, in addition to creating the artwork an artist or designer successfully takes on the promotion and marketing, then it is right that they, like any other person performing this role, should get paid for it. In addition to what they get paid for producing a marketable design.  (In this case GCU would still be making it's fee for printing and sending out, but, rightly, not getting it's usual fee for marketing and selling, which has been done by someone else on this occasion)

This is not "double commission".  The two commissions are for separate activities. If you do one activity you get a commission for that (art production, say) and if you do another (selling) you get paid for that.  If you do both you get paid for both.  Theoretically if GCU produced a range of cards it had designed itself, then it should also get a commission for both designing and selling.

Just a thought.

Linda

There's something I dno't understand about the widget for a third party. (I'm using my own for my store and love it, but that's another matter.) Say I approach a third party with the proposal to install a widget that would sell my cards, and they agree. If they use the link you supplied in the boilerplate e-mail, they could register to become a seller, but how would they know to customize it so it shows my store's cards and takes potential shoppers to my store specifically?

I have nothing against helping other people sell their cards, but I thought the widget would be targeted to my store, since I approached them and persuaded them to install it. No?

It would be cool if we could create the HTML that would target my store and send them THAT code to install. It would ensure that my cards get showcased within the widget. After all, my store sells only Festivus cards, so I would expect those to rotate within the widget, not other kinds of cards, since I would only approach relevant third parties to become potential sellers.

Do I understand the arrangement correctly? Please enlighten me if I've misinterpreted anything.

Hi Linda,
You are right, it's really not a "double commission".  One is a selling commission and one is an artists' royalty to be exact.

Hi Tom,
Sellers do need to register and customize their widget for tracking and accounting purposes.

The Card Seller Widget does not link to any specific storefront.  When a specific card is click it goes to that card's detail page.  When the "Buy" button is clicked it goes to a "Buy my Cards" page that shows all of the cards the Seller has choosen to showcase.

The link that should be given to potential Sellers to learn more & register is:
http://www.greetingcarduniverse.com/community/card_widget.asp

To make sure the Seller chooses your cards to feature you could:
1. include in your email details on how to choose your cards ie:
choose Holiday >> Festivus or hand select Favorites using the heart graphic
OR
2. walk them through the registration and widget customization process

I guess you could register for them, customize the widget and have them change the account information including email address, password and payment information once they login.

In your case I don't think there will be much of a margin for error since Festivus sites will be looking for Festivus cards and the majority of them are from your store.

Hope that helps.  Let us know if you have other questions.
Mindy
