Created by the Kappa Delta Sorority in 1999, National Women’s Friendship Day took place on the third Sunday in September to promote friendship between women and bring attention to the importance and value of women in society. In 2009, the day was expanded to include the entire month of September.

Today, International Women’s Friendship Month is celebrated globally by individuals, companies and businesses, women’s groups, and organizations, promoting the special connections made by women to women.

Beyond the enrichment, support, and encouragement female  friends bring to women’s lives, studies have shown that maintaining and nurturing social ties keep women healthier. Nurturing connections with other women helps women live longer, happier lives. Working with friends keeps women more satisfied with their jobs and more productive. And when women band together to work toward a common goal, the community benefits.

During International Women’s Friendship Month, women are reminded not to put their girlfriends aside to concentrate on their busy schedules.  Friendships with other women are an important source of strength and support.
